So... bakers yeast

Post by EchoSevenNine » Tue Apr 30, 2019 12:52 pm

This seems to be the way to go, so i'd love to give it a go on my next wash if someone could point me in the right direction on a few things?

1 - Bakers yeast is bakers yeast or is there different types?

2 - What ratio do you use it to.

3 - What temperature does it like?

4 - Do you need a nutrient with it and if so, what and in what ratio?

Sorry for all the questions but i don't want to make a balls of it as I'm very keen to try one of those Cornflake/sugar washes!

I never use it as a fermentation yeast.
I do get fresh yeast free from the bakery in the supermarket and boil it to use as a nutrient.

I tend to ferment mostly with Safale S04 ale yeast, or wine yeasts. Others though like the bakers yeast.

The only thing I will add in is that I ALWAYS make up a starter if I am fermenting more than 5 gallons. You don't need to use a lot of yeast if you make a starter.

Just make up your wash, take of a few pints and dilute 50:50 with water. Pitch the yeast into that and wait 24 hours. Then dump that in the fermenter. If you are fermenting A LOT, you may wish to bulk that starter up a bit more before adding it.

As Myles says its a preference thing. I use bread yeast all the time.
Its cheap and it comes out the wifes housekeeping bill, even better.
I use Allinsons if I can and 50G is ok for 25ltr washes.
I just pour it in wait 15mins and stir it in. Works a treat. :D
Temp as its Bakers up to 30c is good.
Yes of coarse you need nutrient. I use Tomato paste 60g or Kale
juice (ask Mash he is King Kale).
