So, some of you may have seen me alluding to this.
I had a bash, deem it a fail, but got close.
I rinsed about 4 litres of spent yeast from my beers, (not enough times it seems}, mixed with 3 veg stock cubes, boiled for a while, with a teaspoon or two of salt.
Left it on the woodburner to condense for a couple of days.
The result is pictured below.
Just about the right consistency, almost the right colour, but not the right taste,or smell.

I am not a great Marmite fan, I eat it maybe once a month, but then eat more on a single slice of toast than the average Marmite dib-dabbers do in the same month!

You gotta try this kind of shit, just because you can.

I am with you there. I am once a month if that, but fancied a go.

Is the taste and smell wrong or just different?

Both wrong and different.
If I had no other access, to the original, as many expats chasing this recipe down find, I could eat it.
A couple of years ago, the factory in NZ burnt down and the shelves in the shops were bereft for about 18 months.
I think it is the Hop "funk" that messed up my version.
A good, clean yeast, and this would be close enough.
Live and learn. :)
