Should i whip my Kale!?

Post by Fierymac » Fri Nov 08, 2019 12:54 pm

I started a new Kale wash 5 days ago. Sitting with an aquarium thermometer at a steady 25 C. It does bubble but not very furiously and not very regularly. Sometimes can be every 10 seconds, sometimes 90 seconds.

When i did it i didn't have a balloon whisk so made do with a fish slice - a lot of splashing and sticky kitchen floors and walls later....

I've bought a whisk and i'm wondering if i should give it a whack now? Will it interrupt the process at all? I'm not any rush for it as i'm working away for 3 weeks anyway come Monday so will be left to it's own devices until my return anyway.

You are probably tooo late. That is either an initial thing. Or a restart thing. Not really a bugger about a bit in the middle.

Bubbleometery does not work very accurately. Whats the SG?

Obvious question - is it insulated? Aquarium heaters can create thermal lamination (AKA cold on the outside).
I guess the question should be is it stalled or slow? Slow > sort it out. Stopped needs restarting.

SG is 1.060.
It's not exactly insulated - has a big towel wrapped around it, but whenever i check the temp it's always 25 - admittedly that's not checked at 2am!
It is still fizzing quietly so doesn't seem to have stopped - maybe just going slowly?

+1 yes indeed - warm it up a bit.

Oh okay - the instructions i had were that 20C was a gentle 3 week ferment & 25-28 was a 10-14 days.
Like i said - i'm away for 3 weeks from Monday so i was just letting it take its time.
It's Allinsons bread yeast - the yellow tin.

Allinsons definitely likes to be warm.
I would turn up the heat.
It won't go off, if it finishes while you are away, and it will clear nicely even with a heater in it, should it ferment out in the first week.

Okay thanks all.

Bumped it up to 30 yesterday afternoon and it definitely seems to have sprung to life. Not bubbling madly, but every 6-8 seconds or so which is more like what i would expect.

Easydrinker - good to know it wont be a problem if it sits "done" for a couple of weeks while im away too. That was a worry.
That said, can i ask my Missus to switch the heater off once it's stopped to save the power - or will keeping it warm be of any benefit?

Tell her to switch it off, if done fermenting and help save the planet.
It will clear faster, cooler.
I am seriously tempted to ramble on about CO2 emissions, but feel that should be a post for another time.

Robert.

Edit; Does she know how to use a hydrometer?
I don't airlock neutrals, whiskys or beers; instead using a hydrometer , (and lack of visual bubbling) as my guide.
But each to their own.
You feel your way into this, and maybe evolve your own way of doing it.
Whatever, I wish you a good result.
Cheers.

She needs to know its fine before turning off. Perhaps an early birthday present could be a hydrometer :D
