Distilling beer in the airstill

Post by Theredguy » Tue Dec 03, 2019 9:37 am

Hi. New to the whole air still thing but have got around 6 stripping runs under my belt. As I also brew beer and wine I want to ask if any has distilled beer thru the air still? I know you can make whisky from malt extract and whisky yeast and I thought it could be cool to make a “whisky” of some kind with my beer leftovers.

Welcome aboard and what a god question

Oooh yes. This a favorite pastime of out members.

Here are the highlights.

Make the beer as normal, single mash for Alcohol, not flavour 68c ish. No hops. 15 min boil (till hot break) Boiling saves a lot of mess in the still as it drops out the proteins that foam up. Chill. Ferment. Still.

Cut the spirit into separate small jars, this way you get to understand where/what the heads & tails are, and then can blend back to taste.

If you have't already get a spirit refractometer.

Search 'Freezer stripping' to... might save you some time.

For a long time, home distillers have said don't ferment hopped beer.
The current American craze is for micro breweries to offer the beer, AND the distilled beer to customers.
Go figure. :)

I thought it was beer spirit cut with hopped ale.

Have I missed the point? It was on my list to bench test?
