They're just not easily obtained here.

The last "milk churns" used here 30 or 40 years ago tended to be aluminium, and even those are quite rare as the milk industry had moved to static stainless tanks and collection tanker trucks (in a former life I worked both in farming and milk processing).......

Hence it can be a PITA to locate containers of appropriate type and quality.....

Hi Phantom
I dont know if you have obtained a milk churn yet.
I have one that I do not need. It is a 30l Italian Stainless Steel milk churn and scew lid with a 2K element and an inbuilt quality tap to empty the waste. I have used it for all grain. It is top quality, perfect condition. Im happy to post or even happier if collected.
I also have a built and working but not boxed 40w power controller.
Pm me if intereted.
Norm

Mate, I've been using an unmodifed, 50l SS keg boiler for 50 or so potstill runs now.....including malt whisky washes. If you get into the boiler; soon as reasonable after a run; with a hose thats got decent pressure, it cleans more than well enough IMHO.
No real need for larger openings (although one that doubles as a sightglass would be good to check for puking potential ;) )

I've found the real issue is the weight when carrying the keg, esp for emptying the boiler post-run. For this, a drain tap would be VERY useful I reckon.
(due apologies to all concerned for offtopic post)

My keg was cut with a plasma cutter and a 2-1/4" half socket mig welded on. The 50L keg is as big a boiler I'll ever need (for spirit runs al least).

Thanks for the link mate I've sent him a couple of questions

I presume your own boiler has an exposed element Cap'tn ? So if it's ok to drill with a hole saw it could be a good option

If he replies to your Q's with details like wall thickness etc, can you post the responses please ? I'm curious to find out as he may be that good option you already mentioned...... >:D

Doh!......

Yes, of course. How bloody stupid of me to have overlooked that........

Given than the Brouwland ones appear to be the same though, I'd have thought with rolled and welded base seams, as long as the heater element was secured correctly, and not placed too far up from the bottom (say something like 1cm clearance from the bottom), it's unlikely to flex too much.

Hell maybe even getting a "tame" welder to tack a strengthening band round it might do the trick. I suppose it's one of those "test and try" things..... then check for leaks ::)

They look rather like the ones I was checking out over at Brouwland website.

Having just looked there, I can't see any detail of the thickness of the metal.

On the other hand, my T500 boiler isn't exactly what I'd call "thick walled" either, so I presume that as long as there's room for the vapour to escape and no chance of a pressure build up, then I don't really see why not......
