i suffer this problem of cloudy spirits, normally on tap water but mixed with spring water today and that went cloudy too for the first time? could this be a temperature thing? i too never had this problem with tap water on my airstill but have it on the t500, i shall be replacing the plastic pipe and tap with copper / stainless

Hi there think ive read somewhere that if you haven't washed your carbon through enough the minerals can come from there causing this problem

I doubt its got anything to do with the type of still - as none of the offending minerals should carry over into the distillate.

I would guess its more to do with temperature that the let down spirit is stored at - sometimes they come out of suspension, sometimes they don't - its a mystery.

I have really nice soft water, and I have had problems with sediment before. Now I store most things above 46% which I have read helps prevent sediment or clouding when mixing - haven't had any issues since then using my tap water to water spirit down.

lyon.... i never had it with the airstill either !...

i only got it when i used the t500.....il try filtering to see if that helps.

I live in a hardwater area and I always use distilled water produced with my airstill. No problems at all with cloudy spirit

probably just calcium in the tap water coming out of suspension - single malts are often kept above 46% to stop this happening - commercial outfits mixing below this will chill filter the spirit to prevent sediment or cloudiness.

Use bottled spring if your water is hard, or keep it above 46%. If you have some high proof on hand, try mixing it in to see if it goes back into suspension.

well i distilled a wash and it came out at about 93ish% abv and i was pleased with that as it was crystal clear.... but after i added water, it went slightly hazy/milky and im sure i read on here somewhere that you have to add the water in a certain way but i cant find it..

iv now got a layer of what looks like "white fluff" in the bottom of the demi john but if i shake or disturb it, it turns the spirit cloudy again.....

btw, i cut it to 40% with tap water if that helps..
