Lavendar essential oil makes me want to wretch,I cannot understand it's 'soothing' qualities!
If that's your only experience of essential oils and alcohol Chuck,then I totally understand your thoughts!

I have used Lavender essential oil to flavour gin. A little goes a long, long way. I added 3-4 drops to a bottle and made... a bottle of lavender gin essence! I kept some and add about 2-3 drops to a martini. Based on that, I am not sure that those Still Spirits essences are using essential oils. In some of my earlier experiments, I made gins that were undrinkable strong. However if you diluted 1-3 ounces in a bottle of neutral, the result was quite a drinkable gin. That may be how the essences are made.

Maybe you miss-understood me AT,I was referring to the essences marketed by Still Spirits and others.
The concentrations used suggest to me that essential oils are used.
I am happy to play with botanicals,but do fancy the challenge laid down by essential oils.
Gin looks like one of the easiest essences to try to replicate.

I found out that all bulk gin production such as Gordons etc etc rely on a tiny percentage of heavily botanically flavoured spirit added to bulk neutral spirit
Wether that's grain spirit I wouldnt know nor would it probably matter
The new wave of small distillers such as Sipsmiths do it differently simply buying ethanol presumably dilute then re run with botanicals in the boiler or basket so really it's rectifying
There are variations to the process but not that many it seems

Not yet,but you prompted me to look for the essential oils used in Odin's Easy Gin.
I might try them.
I am sure that gin essence must be made up the same way and bulked out with glycerine or such.

I made some great peppermint schnapps using 14 drops of pure peppermint oil in 750ml of neutral...

you can add or reduce the oil for your favorite taste...

I was just curious if essential oils would be a good alternative instead of using essence and if so if anyone had recipe for using essential oils. What flavors are good and which one's are not. Amount to use and any techniques
