A starting SG above 1.080 in a sugar wash indicates too much sugar. Back it off. Less than 1.070 and your going through the effort without the return.

BTW its mainly the yeast used (and how little it is stressed during fermentation) that is the major component in the pleasant or otherwise smell. ;)

I found my first one took 8 days to finish, but I also think the fish tank heater helped me as there was no temp swing through the whole process. Once the sg reaches 0.990 it's ready to go.

One thing I notice is that the smell from it is really really pleasent The wife's very keep o. That as she says the smell of brewing wash makes her want to heave.

I'm three days in now and its still fizzing away like the first day I put it on so that must be a great result so far. Updates to follow
