I’m Just one step ahead of you........today I just did my first proper spirit run using all the strips from the 5 strip runs that I’ve done.
Bingo! It was great seeing the lovely clear spirit coming out. Started over 80% and stayed there quite a while ( I nicked a litre of hearts ) and collected the rest after 5ossing 300 ml of fores. It then slowly went down to 35% where I started to smell the beginnings of the ‘wet Labrador’. I started my feints there and collected down to 10%
All in all a very satisfying haul

Nice one! Are you using a T500? Did you not use reflux for the spirit run?

Regards, Marc.

4hrs start to finish with 13 litres in the boiler.

Not to shabby. Well done.

The boil was still aggressive and the wash was still murky, but with a little water it maintained a steady dribble throughout.

Started off at 80% then dropped to 70 and held there for ages, then suddenly fell off down to 20 where I stopped. Is this how a strip on a pot still should go?

4hrs start to finish with 13 litres in the boiler.

Happy days! Time for some spirit runs, I have about 24 litres of low wines to process.

Marc.

Ps. I agree that a clear wash would have prevented me some hairy scary moments.

I think this is the key....patience!
I left it a week and a half after it had finished then gave it a vigorous stir and whoosh back and forth between two buckets the ran it......perfect!

This aggression coupled with a very murky wash resulted in very inconsistent yet reliable trickles from the take off. Surge boiling is what I think causes this.

Get some shrapnel in it. 1p's 2p's and/or bits of copper pipe (flatten some)

I have my water sorted with washing machine valves and hozelock style connections, works a treat.

It seems as if the lowest constant energy on the induction hob is still too aggressive.
The whole set up wobbles.

This aggression coupled with a very murky wash resulted in very inconsistent yet reliable trickles from the take off. Surge boiling is what I think causes this.

Over time these grew into some spectacular pukes! Hot wash firing out of the take off like a hose. Is this foam creeping up the column?

Going down to setting 4 where the cycling kicks in slows everything down and you do see the cycling at the business end. This setting may be ok for the spirit runs.

Anyway take 3 tonight with a hot plate and and some butter and more boil enhancers.

Wish me luck.

Good news. The induction hob I have has 10 power settings. 1-4 cycle to maintain a temperature,
5-10 do not, remaining constant. As these are the settings I'll need to be operating at I'm excited to use this the next time I Strip.

I also have an array of valves and hozelock attachments to apply, fixing (hopefully) my water troubles. I'll upload a picture of my set up when it is.....set up.

Marc.

Ah, don’t forget that if you’re boiling water, then you will be too hot. Alcohol is evaporated at a lot less temp than water boils!

Yes, I just mean simply boiling water without the still head on. I could also cook some pasta for tea then.

I'll check out that needle valve, thanks.

The still spirits one that comes with the T500 does a great job and they can be bought separately

Ill see if I can get it to maintain a steady but gentle boil with water first.
It would indeed be the ultimate way to heat a boiler.

Water is my main worry at the moment. PRV's, Ball valves, needle valves etc etc...
