I am glad that you had a good result there.
I have discovered that for me there are many better/cheaper alternatives to the turbo's that I used to swear by.
I will concede that they may take a little more effort and involve a little more mess.
I guess one person's wash may well be another person's poison.
Different strokes for different folks.
Apart from some commonsense regarding safety,distilling does make the world your oyster.

Ran this Birdwatchers Sugar Wash tonight and i must admit you lose in yield but gain it taste. I know i am very new to this hobby but with all that i've read and reread i am very excited of this wash its amazing. Whenever i want neutral product i think this is the way forward. The next wash i will try is the Lentil Wash

Set my first Birdwatchers Sugar Wash away Tue Feb 24

Sugar = 5.63kg
Tomato paste = 246g
lemon = 85 ml
yeast = 70 g
Epsom salts = .16

Starting SG was 1.070
Starting Temp was 30*c
running an immersion heater in it to keep it at 28*c
Finishing SG was .990

now i've set it in a colder place to clear let see how that clears

should collect about 3.37L of 92% if the calc is right

The only time a wash would to be suitable for a still is when you wanted a flavoured result (rum, whiskey/whisky etc) and the still was tuned/built/configured/whatever to produce 95% ethanol. The reason is that all of the flavour would be stripped out negating the value of the rum, whiskey/whisky etc. As Birdwatchers is primarily aimed producing neutral, it can be run in any still. There will be some residual taste when using a pot still.

Any recipe that has finished fermenting can be run in just about any still you want

Like most fermented washes it's always a good idea to use something to suppress foaming during the stripping run to prevent puking, distiller's conditioner, oil, butter, etc., take your choice.

I think he part that really got me was the "Add 805 of the sugar and 80% of the was" This technical jargon is a killer

I have not done the math, neither have the yeast and I suspect this might be the problem.

17g sugar gives 1% alcohol per litre. (and 1° Brix) It's a guide, not an absolute.

IMHO it is not always as straightforward. Temperature, choice of yeast, YAN & endpoint all affect the final % alcohol.

I have seen this figure quoted anywhere between 17g & 20 g. On the plus side, I find it much easier to work with than lb/oz and SG.

Mmmm strange that...because if you use this sugar calc Here
5.63 kg sugar will give you a SG of 1.086. with a predicted 13.2% alcohol.
It just caught my eye that's why I asked about the amount of sugar...never done this recipe so will be watching your outcome.
