Not really experimenting anymore, today I ordered two more sacks of "Chateau Whisky" malt.
And also some cotton muslin to make a custom BIAB.
All I now need is some time

Iv'e been plugging away at this Chateau P/malt, i'm well impressed.
The mash smells have been delightful, really peaty which i'm not
really surprised about.The peat-reek was obvious when it arrived,
35p on the sack, never done peated A/G before so i can't compare.

Just completed the last mash tonight and if this one finishes like
the rest i'm on track for a 25ltr spirit/run @ 30%.

I axed the sugarhead experiment, realising i didn't have the space
or the glassware to complete it. I ran the 14ltrs of 30% strip i had
in the t500 and took 3ltr of 94% nuetral that will end up as something.

As for the A/G. the mash and the strips were really nice in smell but
the ferments weren't as pleasing, nothing bad but the bouquet was a
little more than what i'm used too, must be a peat-thing.

Anyway i opted to divide the bag into 6 mash's, i wanted to get to
know the G/F a little better, as i'll be brewing beer.
Each strip taken down to almost 0% gave me 4ish ltrs @ 30% so i'm
quite chuffed with the mash effiency. The ferments weren't too
bad as well all zero'd out with a little help from a 3grm sachet of
amylaze, and using bread yeast. I was quite taken how the ferments all
finished in 4-5 days.

One thing i will say...A/G doesn't like to give up it's gas, i could whup
its @rs3 all day long and it still wants to climb out of a 1 mtr chimney.

Looking forward to tasting the final product, and having a feints jar for
the future.

If the Belgium stuffs up to 35 that's good value

The one I tried last year didn't seem that peaty but was nice none the less

The heavy from the malt Miller is from Bairds whose Aberdeen maltings supplies at least one of islay's distilleries

Still hoping for some Simpsons heavy via my brewer mate soon.......

Hi AT,
Just bored myself with the numbers.
The geterbrewed is £27.11 delivered to me,stated phenols online 30ppm,printed on my last sack 35ppm.
The maltmillers is £51.20 delivered to me,with phenols at 45ppm stated online.

It can't cost £24 to knock up a bit of peat reek,can it?

I just spent a goodly while searching for the peat reek link on my laptop and came up with a fail.
I do think that I remember it for the most part.

The malt millers is dearer than the get er brewed Belgium malt but much peatier and from British malsters

That said the former I speed matured on dominos before some barrel time and it's tasting pretty good. Be bottling in next few weeks

great post and well done with the favoured result....

IMHO....Please consider:
- there are true, longer-term peat flavour notes to be had from collecting the spirit run tails when using a potstill....if in doubt keep them separate/aired and oaked for some months THEN consider adding to your 'well-earned' keeper spirit, as opposed to chucking in a feints run
- dominoes, particularly iffen they are french oak/toasted as I presume SD are, will potentially provide a sweet/bourbon-type influence to your 'Scotch' (at least in comparison to charred American oaksticks)....so please consider the amount and time of oaking here if you want a dry, smoky result

Haha, Sorry. As you may have gathered I got a bit giddy. I don't often have the opportunity to talk about my endeavours to anyone. You folks may a)know what I'm talking about. b) feign interest for more than 30seconds. I hope your eyes are recovering Robert although I don't believe Specsavers would help with my punctuation Feints are kept and ready to go for the next runs. I may tick the drunkard box of James Joyce. Maybe!
