Hi Aidan, all I know is that all Barley -- and other grains-- contain Alpha Amylase. It is what breaks down the starches into fermentable sugars.
No idea what quantities to use. I don't suppose Pearl barley would be as good as the natural barley but I have certainly used it to make gallon quantities of a beatifully smelling malty wash.

Here's another thought!

Malt extract has Alpha Amalylase in it.
A good way of getting it is to go to Tesco and buy a bag of pearl barley (great in casseroles)
Put 500G in 2 pints of boiling water, cool, and simmer at 65 deg C for two hours. Strain and add the liquid to the wash.

Looks like they only supply to educational facilities. They might be able to give you a contact for the manufacture though.
