Anything else essence or anything or just the wood?

Out of interest, how much are they? The JD ones I use are about a tenner for 1kg :

Yup - the JD ones work great, as do the ones made from wine barrels. Basically as I mentioned somewhere else, you want the chips made from barrels and NOT just standard BBQ chips because those are not made from the right kind of wood (white oak basically).

Again on another site I read about people using the BBQ smoke chips like JD etc for flavouring spirit. No great comments for or against really, anyone here tried it?
