Have to agree Ice. I use Fermipan bread yeast 'cos I can get it $2.50 bucks a pound!

I've looked at rum yeasts in the past....but I'm not sure about the outcome from them...then I read this...Here..I think if it's what you want, and the drink is what you want then stick with it..

I can get fresh bakers yeast for a couple of bob around the corner where I live...maybe one of these days I'll try a rum yeast...who knows??

Have 3 more 26ltr rum washes on the go.
2kg black treacle
4.5 kg demerara sugar
1pk coopra rum yeast
per 26ltr

Wow we have lift off!!!
kept all at 24 c
All went mental 1 hr after pitching yeast.
What i cant believe They all stopped
burping within 3 hrs of each other!!
I know this doesn't mean they have
bottomed out,but its such a fast and
violent fermentation.
OG 1096 now reading .996 in 4 days ?
The trial I did was nearly as quick,
but this time used rum yeast.
Its not cheap but a pal has used this one
and swears by it.
The last batch, I filled the aging bottle
yum after 2 weeks so filtered on Saturday
took to a BBQ Sunday all gone!!!

been given a battery drill have a
de-gassing stick, always de-gass,
just like wine.
Is there another use for these
battery powered things

You can run it right away, I normally let it settle a few days to let any solids settle out, but I'm using horse feed, I don't remember having that issue with treacle.

Just try and degas it as best you can to help reduce the risk of a puke.

Does it really matter if a wash does
not clear? As long as ferm has completed
it should run ok shouldn't it?
Do you use any finings?

My trial using sugar beet as yeast nutrient has not finished, mainly due to a totally converted (finished at.980) wash not clearing,after what seems a dog's age.
I am bored and will strip tomorrow anyway.
I need to get other stuff happening in the brew room

Ended up with just over 3lts of
45% to put on wood. have been
bought one of those oak aging
bottles by the missus.Good girl.
got some USA light oak staves,
they suggest 20g per ltr.
Want to end up with a golden
rum will now leave for 3 weeks
and try.

My molasses washes rarely take more than 36 hours (for a target of 11% ABV) - they really get going.
They fizz like coke, but don't be tempted to stir it before it's done, else it will foam over and you'll have to mop up.

If you are after rum, don't worry about it being a bit warmer than usual when pitching the yeast, lots of esters will make for a better rum (hopefully)

There are lots of unfermentables in molasses - so your hydrometer won't read very well, its only really good for letting you know when it's stopped dropping.

To boost the flavour I use 20% of the wash volume as dunder (whats left in the boiler after the first run) so I use 10L in a 50L wash.

Oh and I highly recommend using melted butter to stop the foaming - I melt it in a jug in the microwave and add it when the wash is hot just before I put the column on.
It really is very foamy otherwise.

Well got to 1002 sg.All new copper arrived for t500
Had to use it. Different to ant thing i have used B4.
Stripped down to 30%, totaled 4.2lts at 51% overall.
Will dilute to 30% run 2 charges in Airstill.
Very pleased certainly smell nice.So far so good
for a 20ltr trial.
