Amazingly, I got tough and had a flake-out day all for myself. I was so tired, I thought I'd have a 30 minute nap; I woke up 3 hours later not knowing where I was or the time of day. Another good sleep is all that stands between me and my first lentil wash - I got a 5kg pack the other day...

I've been reading this post with interest, but I think your right V it takes a lot of time to do.

Much like the Trappist ales that I enjoy so, but they too take all day to brew.

I tried this too and went the juicer route. The potatoes were washed then put through a juicer and then I treated the potato juice as you would a grain mash, that is to say I heated it to 65oC and added a handful of malted barley plus two teaspoons of Amylo Glucosidase to complete the starch conversion.

Once conversion was completed I boiled the wash for twenty minutes then dropped in a wort chiller and when cooled to 25oC pitched it with a Champagne Yeast

It worked out fine and the end product was very good but not enough to justify the amount of labour it took to get enough juice for a 25lt ferment.

Also, at today's prices, malted barley is cheaper and works better in the long run

It is a strong flavour, off the column at 96% its still got a very distinct flavour.
The product was excellent, but just too much work for me on the scale I had to work with due to the capacity of my oven.

Do NOT use raw potatoes. Just don't! If it gets infected... you will wish you had a rotting corpse on your hands instead.

You may not like the flavour through an AirStill, I'd start small.

I don'd know which ones to use, but if you follow this link it will give you a guide as to what not to do.

My method with a juice extractor is doable but you need a serious amount of potatoes.

Have a look around the site there a few threads on mashing spuds, Capt'n C, seemed to have a better result by baking his.
