It might be possible. Avoiding channeling would be a consideration ie keeping it very even and regular in 3D.

What about braiding (AKA platting) it loosely and then forming it into a spiral?

When I asked about using scrap copper wire on one of the other forums I was told that the ordered regularity of a scrubbie or structured mesh would produce better results than random scrap wire. I think it was the rude site though. I don't remember well, it was two or three years ago, but I think it was the number of theoretical plates per hight that would be fewer than scrubbies and so need a taller column to achieve the same results.

Now if you could knit it... Or find some way to do a regular pack.

In any case it would likely be as good as many random packings people have used.

I'm not sure why,but I have bad feelings towards people able to think outside seemingly bigger boxes to myself.
I can totally see why Mash Rookie's idea is a good one.

Bushman had a thread on that subject on HD it was work actually started by Mash Rookie he use very fine strand heavy welding cable and untwisted it...

I've got a bit of cable from work, I nornally take it straight down the scap yard for some beer money but I decided to strip some, mainly to see if it's worth it as the price you get for clean copper is around £3/kg, 3 x more than if it's still got the outer cable on.

I stripped one core of a 20 meter length the 4 core 35mm cable, it took ages and a few stanley blades in the process, anyway this one core had over 3kg of copper in it and I'm thinking I could make my own copper scrubbers out of this, anyone tried it?
