Just info, my VodkaStar with 6kg of sugar has finally finished when I checked it today, I kept the temp a 21°c so it was always going to take longer than the 6 day it says on the packet.

It's taken 12 days at 21°c, hopefully it will make a better product :-)

Interesting I didn't read the post as being about upgrading stills. Just about optimising the product and the process.

I don't fancy a wet still and have to confess to being a timer and forget it guy and don't see that happening with any other still design. (yet)

This hobby, which must be where almost all posters here are,is just that.
No hard and fast rules, no-one looking over your shoulder, some stuff works, some doesn't.
Find what works for you, and if you care, share.
Maybe if it doesn't work, share also.
You are here for fun, or should be.
I stated a few posts back that I had re-visited Turbos, and will not do so again.
Other long term members here, whose opinions I respect, are happy to use them for a neutral.
As they say, opinions are like arse-holes, everyone has one.
I will defend anyone's right to distill whatever they are happy with.
And not criticise them for doing so.
I will do what I can to ensure this site remains active to help anyone with any question or problem that they have, whether we can help or not!

+1 turdbo - what a wonderful expression!

I'd love to run a bigger still (there are plans in the offing) but I'm very impressed with what I've got out of my AirStill. I do filter, but my wheat washes complete in 5 days, I get around 4l of AirStill-grade spirit out of a 25l wash and I'm having great fun playing with gins. I wouldn't go back to a turdbo - too smelly!

I know I'm a bit slow and out of step with the rest of the distilling world.....

With the plethora out there on turdbo yeasts and their consequence why anyone uses them is totally beyond me

HOWEVER......if I was work space challenged I would run an airstill and probably then accept turdbos and consequent parting of coin to filter output to gain something suitable for consumption.

But I'm not. So I don't.

If I was an airstiller I'd be spending all my time looking for ways and means to get away from the turd and then hopefully the filter by running friendlier washes.

I do find the subject of off smell in turbo's interesting. It appears that it is mainly the ladies that take issue.

I ferment inside and distill outside. So fermentation smell is the more important to me.

My twopence worth.
When I re-started distilling a couple of years ago, I was a great advocate of Turbo yeasts.I used to split the packs in two, use a little less sugar, accept a longer distillation time, carbon filter, and all was OK in the world of neutral spirit.
Then I moved to less expensive, more organic washes, like Lentils.
I was so pleased that I stayed with them.
This month I found a few sachets of Turbo, whose B.B.E. dates were almost up and so decided to use them.
The Alcotec did as expected.
The Vodka star was reluctant to start,even full packs, but throwing in some Allinson's soon had the washes looking like a Turbo should, no head but lots of fizz.
The brew room then had that familiar Turbo smell.
I am into the spirit runs of some and the strips of others.
I will be going back to Lentils, I am more convinced now that they are better.
