I never filter until I feel that I have reached the point where I consider it ready to drink and, therefore to bottle.

If/when I can produce two years supply in one year, then, maybe, the second year's wouldn't need filtering if left for the year to settle out.

Not quite sludge,but requires filtering to remedy.

Besides wine, I do, in fact, tend to use them after ageing distillations on oak, to ensure no fragments are left over,but they would be woefully inadequate for clearing washes.
