I've only recently started down the TPW path and have found that (as long as you are prepared to wait a while/few days longer for it to ferment out) I get a better quality, finer smelling and similar ABV neutral to using Turbos at around $8-10AUD per wash rather than, say, $30AUD using Turbos and associated LHBS product. Using AidanMacs double distill 'recipe' my finished product makes a MUCH better base for whiskey/vodka/tequila flavour and (apparently) its comaprative to Turbo-derived sugar wash for Liqueurs. So...its a 'no going back' no brainer for me.

I gave up on the TPW.
It turned the saddles in the T500's colum a funky black with a real bad small.

Hi MARBAKER, Jahtubs is bang on the money. You will need to run the cooling to the Liebig condenser, not only that, if your running without power control, you will need several liters cooling a minute to knock the vapor down. If you\'re on metered water this may be a problem for you. BTW there is no need to pull the packing out, I\'ve found very little difference - that said my column is insulated which may affect things.

My water is free but it\'s on full flow when doing a strip and is really wasteful unless your using a recirculation tank. The take off distillate will still be quite hot on a strip as the T500 Liebig isn\'t up to much on such high throughout, I swapped out the product hose for copper tube, the plastic tube may become really soft and cause you issues with hot distillate.
If your not taking about stripping, and wanting to run as a pot, you will require power control to do it properly. If you just want to strip, you can do without power control as long as you have a high flow cooling supply.
A few things to consider, but I\'m sold on doing 3-4 strips and then a single spirit run with the stripped wash. Much better use of power and your time.

Hi Marbaker,
I know your question wasn't directed at me but it is a little bit worrying and nobody else has replied. You shouldnt run your still with no water cooling. That will just fill your stilling area with extremely flammable alcohol vapour creating a massive fire risk.
There's a thread on here somewhere about running the T500 in potstill mode where different mods are discussed. I think I recall one of them being about routing the water so it only flows through the Liebig condenser and bypasses the reflux coil but I think the chap who did it was also had a power controller as well. Worth checking that thread if you haven't already.
PS - sorry if I've completely misunderstood your question but given how dangerous it would be to run your still without water running through the condenser I thought better safe than sorry!

There's a power controller being used there though, I'm not sure if that cooling setup will knock down the vapour from 2000W.

hi marc83 just been reading your post mate im new to all this,im going to try the tomato wash next time i put one on,can you put me right about a few things,1/ i have a T500 if i take the packing out does that change it to a pot still.and if it is when you put your wash in and switch on the still for a strip run do you just let it run with no water cooler running,2/ and how much do you get out off the wash.thank marbaker

I plan on fermenting 5.7kg of dextrose in 25L to end up with 12%. So, is a double distill required for the TPW when using a Super Reflux with power control mod and scrubbers?

hmmm not overly sure about this recipe, I have seen it before and tasted it before, I guess I like my ss triple distilled wash with the 6kg of turbo sugars and the liquid carbon.
It didnt smell or taste right, I didnt distill it, so I am unsure of the distillation is up to my expectations. Would be interested to see the spectrometry results and compare (fermentation and distillation)

Whooppee! Just distilled Marc83 recipe - got just over 6 litres of 40% at a cost of $aus 8.50 plus power. I wont be going back to the turbos. Thanks you to the forum for putting this topic on. Cheers

Just cracked a bottle of each for research purposes

I did a batch (1.25lt) each TP and VS without wood soaking.

The TP has a slightly \"dryer\" mouth feel to it, but its early days (only 2 weeks) other than that its not a whole lot different between the 2 styles.

yeah i suppose you have to weigh up whats best for you Andy, depending on whether you add carbon and filter the turbos to how you finish you TP washs, I havent tasted any spirit from the TP but on a smell test next to each other I thought the TP smelt a lot cleaner.
