You can get cheap made in China papers on eBay. I find that they work well. They are certainly accurate enough for what I need.

Be wary of cheap pH pens, the ones I've tried were less accurate than the papers or drops. Even got a different reading from a newly calibrated pen when using the calibration liquid the next day. ime the pH test kits using drops are economical.

thanks for the input guys,ive never been happy with this hydrometer
since i got it last year,tripple scale,by alla of france,totaly differant to what i used years ago to make beer and wine
i might invest in a new one just for doing sugar washes maybe a plain simple
type

this is summat like what i got

forgot to say i wish i seen your post earlier about sayin it
all done,cos i stirred it all up doh
ah well hopefully it be clear by weekend

Slightly odd looking scale on the Hydrometer but I agree with YHB. It appears the gravity reading is 0.940 and, assuming it's back at a normal temperature around 20oC, and no further activity in the airlock, that's about as finished as it's going to get.

Normally, cold temp just makes the yeast go to sleep so if it wasn't finished then just warming it back to fermenting temp and giving it a good stir would get the yeast going again.

As I said, in this case I think it's finished

BTW the top of the red section is 90 or 0.900

thanks brian the 1.000 is the tbick line top of green marker
and bottom of red marker i thought .990 is at the top of
the red marker

What makes you think it has not finished, it looks pretty finished to me.

I cannot be absolutely sure because of the picture, but it looks like the 1.000 marker is below the top of the sample, if it is, it's done.

You can try giving it the kiss of life but there is not much chance of resuscitating it, the sugar is all gone.

8 days for a TPW, you must be doing something right.

ok i did start this last sunday,by monday bubbling away nicely then by thursday
the bubbling has slowed down,but friday i had to go away and didnt come back till
today,i then noticed the power had gone,checked lekky meter there was no
credit left so i had a look at my wash it stopped bubbling and coldish to what it was about18 to 20 c,so i took a sample put it in trial jar,put hydrometer
in and saw it hadnt finished fermenting is there anyway of riviving it
or run it in a strip run then use it for another batch

A pH of around 5.5 is said to be best and this can be achieved and controlled by use of a pH buffer. The precise makeup of the buffer is determined by the water you use but a good starting point is to make a buffer of equal weights of Citric Acid and Sodium Bicarbonate.

100g of Citric Acid + 100g of Sodium Bicarbonate will level your pH and if you find the wash has stayed above 4.5 at the end of the ferment then no adjustment would be necessary. If the pH drops below 4.5 you need to increase the weight of Sodium Bicarbonate in the Buffer. I suggest increases of 15g until you get a ferment that ends with the pH still over 4.5

I do a lot of BirdWatcher's Sugar Washes and have found that most ferments get stuck or are really slow is down to temperature.

I keep my 25 litre washes at 30 degrees celcius with the use of an aquarium heater and they ferment to .990 in just over 6 days with ABV of 10.5%.

If you're getting one make sure you get a pH7 buffer solution with it so you can calibrate it as required.

Works a treat and cheap as chips
