Yea,
two weeks wouldn't worry me,three only a little.
Have a wash here,almost down to 1.000,after seven + weeks,- reminiscent of my wine making days,when what I knew really could be written on the back of a postage stamp,if you wrote real small.
I don't have high hopes for the taste,but am coming into winter screen wash season,so all may not be lost!

My answer to lower room temps was to buy more fermenters. 14'C is acceptable for me and a 2 to 3 week ferment is no never mind.

If it gets colder than that, I use a 4 foot tube heater between the wall and the fermenters.

Thanks guys for all the advice I'm going to try a new wash this weekend not decided which one yet, also think I'm going to purchase a cheap heater.

Oh,that did make me smile.
It's about -3°C here tonight,and the only reason that I am still awake is to ensure the log burner is at the right load/setting to make it through the night.
There is a reason I live in such climes,but tonight it escapes me............

But we are heading into winter and my wash has plumetted to 27 degrees C. I am wondering if I should wrap my wife around the tank as a source of heat.

Otherwise, as its a slow day I might head down to the beach for a swim. Brilliant sunny day out.

Attn: Fatlad. .17 - .25 Kg per liter of water depending on the type of sugar. Use your hydrometer. Too much sugar and it will not all get used up. Too little and you have gone through all the work without the return. I shoot for 10-11% alkcohol in my wash. Any higher gives different flavors you may not want. Patience in all thing with distilling is paramount.

Unless you live somewhere as warm as RumJohn,then some form of heater for the wash is almost mandatory at this time of year.
I'm looking forward to next summer, when for a short time, I may not need to use them!

Click the link to "Board index" and then chose "recipes" Lentil wash is there as are links to TPW (Tomato Paste Wash), All-Bran, Kale. All of these are used to produce neutral spirits that you can flavour should you require.

A lot of folk stick with 5kg of sugar for a 5 gallon wash, except Admiral Toad who uses 7 but then runs it twice through a reflux still and activated carbon to get the neutral he wants.

Try the Lentil wash it's simple and reliable and no messy carbon.

On the heaters thing, no matter what recipe you make you'll have to use something to maintain a constant temperature. Fish tank heaters are a cheap and cheerful way of doing that.

Is there a simple alternative to the triple yeast and carbon wash what I can try, don't really want to go down the road of fish tank heaters for the wash.

Just looking for a simple wash that some of you have tried which worked out well.
