There is a treacherous way of using a refractometer and hydrometer I think. With an enormous calculation.
I tried, thought it was a bit shite, so I have actively forgotten it.

Thank you to you all, and sorry for the confusion. I was meaning awash that has fully fermented, but then adding faints before my strip run. I know the strength of faints, but wondered if there was something out there that I could measure alcohol liquid at any level. Given that a wash will almost certainly have a level of sugar still.
Thank you for all your help though, still practicing, but still enjoying my mistakes, usually with an ice cube!

I have paid about £25 for a narrow range beer jobby, so when I saw you had eight in the photo.
I immediately thought - thats not a cheap set.

I have to say I only use my middle one in the parrot - anything else I use a refracto for.

Good god, I didn't pay that much. They were about 10-15 quid each, they look to be a bit more now probably due to exchange rate.

The big ones are really big, and you really need a 500ml measuring cylinder t float them. The smaller ones look to be just as accurate, and easy to read

Once you have spirit I prefer to use a narrow range hydrometer for what you are planning on measuring.

I read it as wanting to know what alcohol is in the wash with a view to knowing what to expect from strip run.

Knowing strength of wash mixed with feints from last run seems reasonable, as does knowing strength of any other concoction before a still run. (point noted about it may still have some sugar in which screws results, though it shouldn't if fully fermented)

edit : on reflection, that is exactly the point, I think. It's a complete pain in the ass to use original gravity to figure abv when molasses etc are used.

The million dollar question for me is are we talking about wash (wine) or spirit.

I though it was a spirit question, now I am not sure.
