Nuclear Whiskey / Nuclear Rum and Spirits Rapid Ageing

Different methods and recipes

Aidan, I have made several batches very recently using JD chips and have not had this happen. Of course, mine would have come from different barrels and our water is not the same.

YHB

I rinse my chips off before i use them... i put them in a ss mesh colander and rinse them for a few minutes no special soaking or anything else then i nuke em I have seen some sediment and few off colors come off at times but not much else... I have not had any sediment issues with the hundreds of cycles i have processed.

Over oaked a few batches but i just put em back in the boiler and call a mulligan.

Chuck, it's definitely not the water as I use RO water for diluting and this is confined to this batch. Plus, the White I nuked after the originals went wrong to see if the dreaded sediment would develop which it would have if it was the water. After two cycles the White was still crystal so I then added the appropriate amount of RO water and waited and waited. 24 hours later still no furry stuff, so, as I said, it's definitely not the water.

The final test, to determine if the JD BBQ Chunks are the cause, I put 1l of White @ 62.5%, again from the same batch, two biscuits of virgin, boiled, American White Oak for two cycles in the microwave. So far, so good! Tomorrow I'll let it down to 40% with so RO water and see what develops....hopefully nothing because if it's not the JD Chunks I'll be completely stumped ::)

Brian, I think you've hit the nail on the head. It did occur to me in the past too so I routinely boil the JD Chunks same as my White Oak but that only cleans the outside...maybe.

What's puzzled me is that I've used some of the chunks from the same batch in my neutral without nuking and made some very nice spirits. ???

From now on the JD Chunks are out for me ;)

I think this is heading off topic, apologies for that.

I've started a thread for "The use of JD BBQ Chunks" under Ageing and Flavouring for anyone who wants to contribute on the subject and let this thread get back to the business of nuking ;D

I was up early this morning-longest day, always try to make the most of it.
Diluted my latest distillate, and then read this thread.
Having no JD chunks or chips,I looked out of the window and saw the whisky barrels bought to construct horse jumps,10 or so years ago.
When these were delivered, several still contained cask strength scotch, another story, but 18 litres of scotch, from the Speyside region(not my favourite) is not to be sneezed at.
One of the barrels, had been out in all weathers-the hills of the Scottish lowlands for the intervening time, and was falling apart.
With low hopes I took a piece, planed all sides down to clean wood.
Whisky smell!
Sawed to small lengths, split with an axe,
put in jar with 43% neutral.
It was taking colour before the microwave, but 3 cycles up to 65°C and it was as dark as dark rum.(OK in my enthusiasm I used a fair amount of wood)to me it tasted FANFASTIC! My near neighbour, with a very impressive Malt collection(and a nose like a bloodhound)thinks it is my best to date-no small compliment!
It beats any of the essences I have tried, and I also have the full SS whiskey profile kit.
The resulting fluid will bear a little tweaking and playing with but I believe has furnished me with what I was after,an easily drinkable Scotch substitute, from my own neutral.
Now if I go for slow aging or Nuclear whiskey in future is debatable, but I owe Fully Silenced a lot of gratitude for helping me see the light with this thread.
This may be off the JD thread, but proves the Nuclear thing really works.
And that I am one lucky bar steward, and the girls might notice the jumps getting smaller......... :)

OK,Since my last tries with this method at 43%,some of which were good, some producing precipitate, which needed paper filtering;Today I had another go with 64% Spirit, crystal clear every time, and after dilution, clear also.
As a rapid way to produce a drinkable product,I cannot fault this method, but believe the ABV is important.

I am working on a recipe list of Nuked Products ... any and all are welcome

IF you have something special you've made by nuking it please post it, even if it has been posted before....

or if you have a specific method that's working well for you.... like a recipe using x number of grams of chips/toasted oak per liter and the process is working well please share it again with the forum.

When i get em all collected in one pile i will post all the different recipes...

Happy Stillin,

I have been reading this thread with great interest.I don't do a lot of Whiskey but I do love a good Rum! :). I was wondering if the process for Rum is the same do you use the same chips and how big a jar do you use?

I have distiller friend named MINIME he is a rummy... he uses the JD chips in his rum and nukes em to add flavor.... he has also used cherry and other flavors....

I have known him to put coffee or coccoa powder in his mash prior to running his rum as well as some maple syrup... at times...

So yes you can nuke rum with your favorite chips, chunks or dominoes...

have fun

happy stillin

In my experience with nuking, you will end up with a better product than you started with, and faster than traditional aging.

I have never followed any recipe closely,it's always a little bit of this and a little bit of that; make your own notes and follow your own path.

May the force be with you.

I'm with you Easydrinker but TBH I'm still at the Noob stage, so any recipies to follow & then I can start doing my own tweaks n stuff once tried.

As per FullySilenced's post in September

"I am working on a recipe list of Nuked Products ...
When i get em all collected in one pile i will post all the different recipes.."

Just wondered if there was any progress on that......could be some interesting reading for most newbies (we'll me anyhow) & TBH I'm getting quite excited about the possibilities this nuke em process may have!! :)

Holiday Candycane Peppermint Stick Nukins

I quart of 40 abv neutral or light flavored spirit,
4 peppermint candycanes the hard ones not the soft ones
4 to 6 tablespoons of sugar (sweeten to taste)

Crack the candycanes up in small pieces and drop them in the moonshine, add 4 tablespoons of sugar,
microwave for 2 minutes or until the product is warm to really warm. Shake it up to melt the cracked candy canes and sugar. Then let it rest and cool. Once its cool shake it again to make sure everything is dissolved.

Light a fire in the fireplace or pit and you can sip it from the jar or pour it on the rocks with a sprig of spearmint or peppermint.

Its not something you will drink gallons of but.... it is tasty and refreshing when with good company.

Happy Holidays to you all,

FS
