Robert. Nylon / polyester open weave.
They need to be sewn in a bucket shape not the obvious pillow case shape.

The base disc should be courser still. A mesh to allow draining.

Consider piping the seams,'cos they do take some weight.

Consider cutting up a fly screen.

I do use a bag in both my mash tuns.

One, a nylon one came with the tun when purchased and is a cylindrical fit to the internal dimensions of the tun.

The other I had made up from nylon mesh by a friend and it is bucket shaped to fit the internal dimensions of the tun, with a drawstring top.

Each bag being flat bottomed.

As Mash mentioned, they do take quite a weight but mine have coped admirably with that. As an octogenarian the weight is more a struggle for me than for the bags I think.

They do discolour readily and I sterilise after each use.

I have made three cylinderical bags so far.
The latest 100% cotton has just performed for the second time.
Thanks for the input guys, I didn't get the answer I wanted, but I do value your inputs :)
I have yet to find a fly screen type material that could do this job.
Believe me, I do keep my eyes open.

Are you after somewhere like this place? http://www.cadischprecisionmeshes.co.uk ... abrics.asp

An instance where invoking my ability of hacking into someone elses thread seems the way to go.
This one, while looking good seems very expensive.

The following link gives the type of nylon material I used to have a bag made up:

Maybe it is my needlework skills that let me down,my attempt with something similar was not good!

I can't sew for the life of me so I bought one of these a while ago: Home Brew BIAB mash bag for brew in a bag up to 40cm diameter pot https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00OX8PLHW/ ... HxbAF39KJG

It doesn't have the circular bottom like Mash described but it is strong as hell, easily holds 6kgs of wet grain & would probably hold more. The price is a little hefty these days mind, I don't remember paying that much

That does indeed seem a hefty price, but if it works, then surely worth it?

I do thank all for their input, but after using my third attempt bag again, I realise that while a little slow and needing a damn good rinse/wash between uses, it does hold back all of the sludge, leading to a cleaner ferment.
As the Stones sang "You can't always get what you want,-but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need!"

Robert.

That does not mean that I have stopped examining every piece of textile that I find,I will do better.. :)

Thanks for your effort there Mash, I when I get bored/tired of what seems to be working at the moment, I may try some serious changes.
It is all about pushing and trying, apart from my neutral, which is now written in stone, and I can do with my eyes closed, or under the affluence of incahol.

I recently stumbled across the above, and it made me smile.

I was recently having a bit of a chat somewhere on the forum with someone about reaching a level of self made spirit that you can take a break from production, and I opined that being quite a consumer myself, and I do mean that very literally, I could not see myself reaching that point.
I might actually have reached that point.
Today I went around with a Tally stick and counted.
I have many, and am in full production, the next eight silly still runs just need a free evening or eight, the Smart still needs to put her frock on and sort the 4 litres of gin that need rectifying.
And the supply cupboard stores, (if they don't explode, see elsewhere) are chocka block with ***** ****, sorry people,I may have just come up with a marketing hotty, and so edited the post in a vain effort to make money ;)

The 5 * could be "first", "drink", I'm getting nowhere with this... :D

The 4 * could be "wine"??? don't think so...Come on guys I need help. ???

I would so like to rename this thread , What I Did Today or The Day Before, as that is where most of mine occur. :)
Yesterday I nuked some of my latest Chateau Whisky distillation.
And drank half a litre in celebration ;D
Not that it is very good or anything like that.
Today I revisited the bottle,I was correct the first time.
Happy daze ;D

As a regular drinker, by this I mean I drink every day, and not buying any commercially produced beverages, it has taken me some time to build up a sufficiency of stock so that I am not champing at the bit for ageing to complete, in order that I might drink.

Today I did a stocktake:

1 X 5 Gallon Barrel of Whisky

25 x 75cl bottles of Whisky ( Château )

45 litres bulk stored Whisky awaiting bottling. ( Château )

27 x 75cl bottles of Dark Rum

19 x 75cl bottles of Blackberry Brandy

7 x 75cl bottles of Damson Brandy

6 X 75cl bottles of Blackberry Wine 2009

10 x 75cl bottles of Blackberry Wine 2011

4 x 75cl bottles of Blackberry Wine 2015 (Most of 2015 vintage went to Brandy)

I feel that I no longer have to be tempted in to not allowing sufficient time to the ageing of a product now..

I am unsure of the number of negatives there,at least two. A double negative, possibly making a positive?

I too have the largest supply of alcohol that I have ever owned.

A new brew demands a tasting though, I just need to know, soonest,
if it was worth it , and nuking does that for me, before allowing a more gentle aging process.

I wish my own aging process was more gentle. :(
