This could possibly reduce the price of a whisky wash i understand that this is a food grade extract but i have read that home brewers are using it with success

Me and the Cap'tn got 25kg of LME from the Worcester hop shop for £48 plus carriage but you need to contact them as this quantity is not on the website

I have looked at the suma stuff before but had some pretty negative responses from people on the homebrew sites about it !

I have however used the holland and barret stuff with good success if that's any help ?

Basically making it up as I go along
Got 25kg of peated malt from the same mob, hand ground and mashed approx 5kg for a 25 l wash
Made up the OG with the LME to give about a 11% ABV
So far so good much flavour after a few weeks in the wee cask
The ones I've done and put in demi's with whisky barrel shavings rant much op think they may go in as feints in future runs. These didn't use peated malt however.

Hi AT do you ferment on the grain or just use the liquid after cooking/mashing

Last one I did I mashed and sparged 5kg of hand ground peated malt in a Muslim type bag some fine flour got through but basically clean wort lovely sweet and smokey
Added some LME to boost ABV and body
The spent grist or draff I think it's called was totally tasteless and without smell
Can only assume cattle are about as picky as lager and alcopop drinkers.

Just put down my first wash using the Suma Liquid barley malt extract and used
4kg sugar disolved in 3 ltr boiling water with 1 spoon of citric acid
then added the 3.18kg liquid malt extract and mixed
then 0.5kg peated barley malt covered with 3 ltr boiling water and cooked in the slow cooker for one hour on warm setting, after 1 hour strained the liquid and added this to the wash then topped up to 26 ltr with cold water,using 1 ltr of wash i made a yeast starter using
2tsp of brewers yeast
0.5 tsp epson salts
1 tsp calsium carbonate
4 tsp dap
10 tsp distillers active dried yeast
hydrated for 30 min and pitched at 34 deg c
lid on air locked and bubbling like crazy in no time.start sg was 1.110 and predict final sg to be 1.010
i am expecting 13.5 abv from this brew so the yield should be good

Try Holland&Barrett a 454g Jar cost's £2.35 that works out at £11.75 3.5Kg for the same amount. The specs state that the malt contains 65-75g of carbohydrates per 100g. This is a really good carbo count and I may try it myself.

In Australia
a 11 litre/15kg 'growler' of light or amber LME costs about $85 (ie. 55 pounds)....so aren't you guys lucky!!!

I use it for Fine Scotch Whisky and, whilst $$$$, it has always been of good quality IMHO.
