pumpkins ?.....WTF.....

Postby Phantom » Tue Nov 19, 2013 7:24 am

Halloween wasn't all that long ago and there still seem to be a plethora of pumpkin wine, beer and mead recipes floating round the various forums.

The SPAM's go on about pumpkins like they're some sort of super food.

And I just don't get it.

Maybe they have different pumpkins but the ones they picture always look the same.

The ones I've tried are bland/tasteless. Yes a pack or roasted, shelled pumpkin seeds is very nice, but apart from the aesthetic use as a jackolantern, they seem like a complete waste of time.

Most of the recipes seem to include spices and other flavourings that MUST mask the almost non-existent flavour.......

So what is it about bloody pumpkin ? I just don't get it ?

Funny ...we had one given to us up the allotments, my better half did soup, and then pumpkin pie. Your right if it wasn't for what you add to it, it would taste like wallpaper paste..but the pie was nice.. :D
I tried to be normal once, worst two minutes of my life.

Which likely means it was sugar and spices etc, that made the pie good ?

Pumpkins are extremely variable in quality. Good pumpkins have a sweet nutty flavor, but the pumpkins they sell for Halloween decorations taste like cardboard. The best tasting pumpkins tend to be the smaller ones.

Yes, what you want for eating are called Pie Pumpkins and they are good eating. The Jack-o-lantren types are livestock food not people food. I only made that mistake once. ;D

Well, I tried the large orange ones, but also small green ones with a lighter stalk, slightly larger but with 2 coloured green stripes and a yellow one that was about the same size.

They all tasted pretty much of a muchness! a.k.a. mediocre pap.

Equally, so called "butternut squash", which didn't taste of butter or nuts !

Maybe I don't have a taste for them, the only mellon I've enjoyed is Honeydew and Gallia.

So many of these type of fruit or are they veggies or what, are nice and impressive looking so excellent for supermarket sales etc, the larger pumpkins seem fine for the seeds or halloween, but little else. The water melons are too lightly flavoured to be of much use - maybe there are nice tasting ones and we just get the pretty shit that the supermarket are happy to display.........

I don't know, they all seem just like over rated pap !

It'd be great if I actually knew what flavour/taste to expect, then I'd know if the ones I can get are shit, but they're just not big here......... the fuckers who do keep a few different types don't seem to know name types etc, so I don't know what ones to look for by name etc.......

Maybe they're one of the few foods I've tried that I don't like........ Dunno, I don't mind marrow, courgette/zucchini, etc......

Hum? Well I suppose we don't visit the westernside of the pond for tasty natively developed food do we........

For that, France is only a ferry ride away, parts of the far east are a bit inconvenient but thank fuck for the debris of the Empire eh! A chinky or indian down most high streets.

Plus I prefer a ruby over a McDogs arse any day......

Well, for my 2 cents worth..pumpkin pie here is awesome but I don't like squash/zuchinni (or however it's spelled)or other crap like that. I wouldn't chow down on a pumpkin in the field mind you, but pies always taste good. We have a local "celebrity" here who was/is in the guinness book of records for his pumkins, his name is Howard Dill from Windsor, Nova Scotia. http://www.howarddill.com/
It's such a big deal around here we have pumpkin races! People carve them out then paddle them in a race called the pumpkin regatta. This is about 30 minutes from where I live.http://www.novascotia.com/travelmedia/e ... fault.aspx

Overall? Yeah, wtf? I wouldn't make pumpkin whisky. ::)

Turning a pumpkin into a boat and paddling it is daft enough to interest me!
