Can't taste tails?

I've always been puzzled when people said they could not taste the transition from hearts to tails. I recently had some nasal surgery (nothing serious, just a little renovation :D) which has left my nose totally stopped up for the time being. I was cutting a recent run of rum and I simply could not taste the tails. And by the ABV I know that I was deep into nasty rum tails. Horrid stuff. I ended up doing a safe cut by ABV.

As our sense of smell is linked to our sense of taste, I will speculate that the taste of tails is mostly in the odour. So if someone is unable to taste tail, they may have nasal congestion or a reduced sense of smell.

I am super sensitive to tails (now, as it's a learned response) I was also amazed the first time I tried to cut when I had a cold, couldn't taste the tails, heads were tricky too.

I just had to play it safe with a narrow cut, and chucked the rest into be distilled with the next run.

Still trying to get through the life-long smoker legacy here, more than two years down the line from quitting, still struggling with taste and smell, sometimes takes a while and a few tries to make a cut at a point that is right.
Meanwhile, I just want to slap every smoker that I encounter :)
DON'T DO THAT!

I quit in January, 10 year habit....maybe this is why I'm still not happy with my cuts??! ???

That would be a good reason, and possibly the correct one.
