Filtering spirits after distillation

Still having taste problems after filtering

Postby Bigusdickus » Mon Dec 30, 2013 3:42 pm

I've been using a T500 for the last 3 years and cannot crack how to get a pure distillate after filtering. If I make a rum based spirit it's passable but the gin and vodka still tastes "raw". I have an in-line ezee filtering system as I also could not get on with the "Z", and I pass the 50 spirit through twice.
I'm obviously missing something............. any idea's? ???

Welcome to the forum.

You are not giving us many clues to go on.

What recipe are you using?

How much sugar is in your wash?

Do you do a stripping run before the spirit run?

What cuts do you make?

Do you run the spirits through the still once or twice before using the filter?

The answer to all these questions and and a lot more will be a guide for folks to help you.

There is a huge difference in how you distill a wash intended for rum and one intended for a neutral e.g. vodka or gin. Even although the wash may be the same.

Rum should not go near a filter. A good filter will remove the characteristics that make it a rum.

I do not use a filter on neutral either. I believe it can be distilled so as not to need filtering. But you must have a good clean wash to start. Your cuts must made at an appropriate time and your equipment needs to be clean. I dont mean sparkling.

Work on quality rather than quantity. It is easy to have a good run and corrupt it by trying to get that little extra.

Keep at it.
