Just finding my feet at the moment after using a Turbo yeast on my first wash with added charcoal as a first time personal benchmark.
Next time I need to do a tried and tested wash so I know good from possibly bad after the comments about Turbo's I've seen??

A mate of mine used a turbo on a honey wash he did..... it was awful afterwards and tasted of yeast - maybe he did something wrong tho....

Lot of negative stuff about turbos. IMO, if they taste bad, it says more about the competence of the maker, than the ingredients.

Designed for sugar wash and as long as they're carbon filtered they're fine.

If yer makin anything else, then there's likely better yeast to be used..........

You could be right Phantom, he doesn't make a lot and it was an experiment.... but can't see why it tasted so badly of yeast after being distilled tbh? I dont mean it tasted slightly of yeast.... I mean it was like putting dried yeast on your tongue lol

Had a go at setting 2 of these washes off at the same time.followed recipe to the letter except a few grams shy on years (44g)
It's formed a lovely yeasty head......and that's it OG hasn't dropped at all over 48 hours

Any ideas ? Meanwhile the 2 VSs are bubbling away happily

The fact that it has a frothy head means the yeast is viable so there shouldn't be a prob. Try stirring in the head it may just be a long aerobic phase. ;)

Cheers guys I did give it a good stir and even pitched a bit more Alison's yeast

Seems to be just starting now

Perhaps with it being a 'normal' not turbo then maybe I should have given it a bit more aeration

You may be right AT,although I find poor aeration with this wash shows in slower finishes, rather than starts.

I wonder how much of the 72g gross weight of a packet of VS is yeast?
And the VS yeast is arguably "superior",at least in the speed of fermenting of sugar to alcohol, and we might expect Allinson's to not be so quick off the blocks, being considerably cheaper,so I simply use lots of it.

Allinsons and VS will be a different strains of Yeast AND Allinsons is just yeast. Whereas VS as I understand it is a blend of yeast, nutrients and additives.

Yeast is an enormous subject and things as simple as how it is rehydrated will affect the speed of takeup and final finish.
