Vent Vinbrite Wine Filter
i know there is finings to clear our washes but has anyone tried to clear the wash with this.
what i was thinking was let the wash finish fermenting then rack into a clean 25 liter bucket(So very little sediment in bottom) then use this.NOTE this idea is for clearing washes before it goes into the still
Cheers

Re: Vent Vinbrite Wine Filter
I've looked at similar filters and they are really meant for polishing up wine that has cleared. I am pretty sure that if you try and use even the coarsest pad on a uncleared wash, the filter is just going to clog. Also check out the cost of the filters vs the fining agents. IMO you are just going to spend a lot of money to be frustrated.

In full agreement with Chill. They are excellent filters for polishing wine that has been racked and cleared.. Virtually the slightest solids will clog the filter pad, which are not cheap now, given the latest price rise for them
Besides wine, I do, in fact, tend to use them after ageing distillations on oak, to ensure no fragments are left over, but they would be woefully inadequate for clearing washes.

Interesting what you say about filtering Oaked products there Toper.
I am usually convinced that I have siphoned off clear liquid from such, but after leaving a clear glass bottle upright for a week or two, there is sometimes the finest, haziest small amount of something in the botttom.
Not quite sludge, but requires filtering to remedy.
Robert.

Re: Vent Vinbrite Wine Filter
I can't be absolute about this, but I tend to think that there may well be a surface deterioration of the oak, when ageing, creating miniscule granules of oak to be suspended in the distillate. This might not be apparent in a barrel ageing situation, where such deposits might well drop below the level of tap run off.
I never filter until I feel that I have reached the point where I consider it ready to drink and, therefore to bottle.
If/when I can produce two years supply in one year, then, maybe, the second year's wouldn't need filtering if left for the year to settle out.

This link shows how I address the problem and has served me very well for a number of years now.

Works fine for 6 bottles then change the filter materials.
