Advice on heads

Postby Superslim007 » Fri Jun 21, 2013 8:38 am

Looking for your input guys (I am assuming from the posts I have read your all guys) there's a question are there any lady distillers out there or is it just guys?

I have a T500 which runs beautifully and I have been collecting 50-70 heads

From what I have learned sugar washes do not produce methanol so my heads are just bad tastes, if I collect enough heads say 2-3 litres over time could that not go in 20 litres of water and run through the T500 discarding the first 50 or so mls to obtain a decent neutral spirit?

I'm a guy unfortunately lol, I don't know if theres any lady distillers?. Member emptyglass sometimes wears a dress so I'm not sure haha. When you say 50-70 heads, what do you mean?. What wash are you doing?. You mention heads alot, theres 4parts to your wash when its distilling. Fores (bad, throw them out), heads (keep them aside for a low wines run later), heart (this is the best part of your run and you want to keep it), and tails (keep aside and add to the heads for a low wines run). Heads and tails can be blended to hearts for a desired taste also. You can keep heads and tails from multiple runs (low wines) and water them down to 30-40 abv and do a spirit run. Will produce a much cleaner product. Some people do this up to 10 times to get a pure produce, I don't see the point really. Anywho ive rambled enough lol. Good luck.

Thanks for that, I think I actually mean the fores (still new to this) the first 50ml that the T500 instructions tell you to ditch just though if its not methanol you may be able to reuse guess ill just keep giving it to the wife for cleaning the windows

I rerun all heads and tails on following runs all you are doing is recovering the good alcohol for mixing and drinking the rest simply recycles just like big distillers do

Yip, I do what AT does for flavoured washes like rum or whiskey.
But I don't bother collecting tails al all when producing neutral.
Tails = flavour which is why its good to recycle these to get a flavourful rum or whisky after a couple of generations, but if not really that advantageous when you are aiming for a neutral spirit, so I don't add them.

Also, when tails are really concentrated with running a column, they absolutely stink and you need to flush out the condenser to get rid of the smell and flavour, and stop it stinking up your garage\house when in storage.

Not just methanol to worry about, there's stuff like acetone and other nasties in the foreshots.
