Cant believe I did this

Postby short2 » Tue Jul 26, 2011 12:18 pm

I put 8k of sugar into 21 lt and added wine yeast. I then read on the forum wine yeast is not any good. It bubbled for a day and died. I then put 60g of Allisons bakers yeast into it.That bubbled for a day then went dead. It gets worse. I decided that a trip to my local supermarket would do the trick and bought 100g of blocked yeast for 50p. I added 50g and it just about blew the fermenter up. It was spewing everywhere. I had to cream off the top twice befor it settled. All this time the hydrometer was stuck at the botom around 110.I left things for a week and still no joy and decided to toss it out. Then changed my mind and tossed in 2k of sugar agitated it again and got a sizzle from it, so banged in a tripple distilled and its been blowing now for a couple of weeks .It is over three weeks now since I started this and God knows when it will finish and what I will end up with. The hydrometer reading last night was at the sweet beer mark around 20. The crazy thing is I knew I should not be doing what I did but carried on regarless. One good thing has come out of this is I found out from Asda they will give you the blocked yeast for free. My local one does anyway so I will make good use of that in future. They say you live and learn.I just wonder when my turn will come.

My local Tesco does the same, any time the wife or I are down we get some for free. I think most bakers will dish it out too, but I like to take it off the big boys.
I just bung it in the freezer till I'm ready to use it, I don't use it for fermenting, I only boil it up with fertiliser,Vit B and a pinch of epsom salt to use as nutrient, works a treat.

Hi Cap, I take it you are into gardening also. Sainsbury charge you for it the B8888888.We dont go there much anyway. Generally for petrol.Sorry I have take several days to reply but one thing follows another. That wash believe it or not is still puffing away and is up on the border of black and yellow.I see some of the guys are complaining about the price of sugar. Several months ago I emailed Tait and Lyle because I could not get dextrose unless I surrendered an arm and a leg to a health shop. They wanted to sell me 20ton but my shed is not big enought to take that never mind my pocket. They also told me to expect major rises in the price of sugar, dextrose ect due to the fact there had been a bad harvest last year of sugar cane and they where living of stock from the previous years harvest. It will rise further of that I am sure. I was down in Asda tonight and it has gone up from 62p per k to 82p per k. However, if you buy 2k it is £1.22p so I bought a few quids worth to be safe.. I also notice that wineworks have been creeping up prices on Turbos etc.. I am of the turbo trail for the time being at least. Have to experiment with other washes now. Closing now as I am a bit hit and missed. Cheers to you and yours. Christ it Friday night
