Slightly confused

I've been following mozrs excellent guide but I'm only getting around 1200ml from each 4L batch where the blurb says collect 1500ml. Plus I've just tested it with my shiny new alcometer and it's around 40% rather than the stated 50%. Not sure whats happening there. Also, can someone give me a formula for diluting (x) number of litres at (y)% down to 30% for the spirit run? Bit thick at maths!

" I'm only getting around 1200ml "

the volume will depend on the strength of the wash going in - this is not an exact science at this level& to be fair, 1200 mil doesn't sound far-off IMO

"formula for diluting"

I'm sure someone will be along with a formula for this.
I tend to just chuck some water in, give it a shake and then retest it

Manual calc as follows;
Current ABV divided by Target ABV, subtract 1 from the result and multiply by the volume of spirit.

If you have 5Lt if Spirit @ 65% and you want to dilute it to 40% the math would look like this;

65 divided by 40 = 1.625 minus 1 = .625 multiplied by 5 = 3.125 lt of water to be added giving a final volume of 8.125 lt @ 40% ;D

The result you are getting indicates that your wash was a few % lower in ABV than Mozr's was. That will affect the absolute measurements of the results but not the relative ones.
