For my proprietary tipple, I like to head south, to the land of the stripey jumpered, beret wearing, garlic scented bloke called Mr Armagnac.....[/quote]
Aye,'tis not a bad tipple.
But would favour the harder to find Eau de Vie de pomme from that country.
Mostly now produced by people like us.As the ancient right to produce it dies out.

Presumably the "Eau de Vie de pomme" alludes to calvados but straight out the still and not aged or anything ?
Or is it different ?

Re: favourite proprietary tipple
The old time farmers around Normandy,(possibly elsewhere) would make their own cider, and a travelling still would come by for the distilling.
I saw it in action about 15 years ago.
The right of the farmer to do this is dying with them,it is no longer passed on.May even have gone now.
Some produce enough to age in a barrel, many drink it "raw",some mix it with cider to produce something caled "Pommeau".
A bottle I was given was probably around 60% abv.
Robert.
