Hi guys, as you might have guess from this post im very new to fermenting, i bought a airstill from my local HBS and i was advised to get withit a kit which contained as the title says Tripple distil with all of the other things, carbon sachet and another packet that i cant remember the name of.

My question is, i have had it fermenting for 5 days now i took a sample of it today in a sterilized jug and tested its alcohol level it is reading 0, i tested with another device which again i cant remember the name of and it was reading 1.000. mind you i wasnt sure what it was going to do anyway but i thought id take the reading.

Has this batch failed to ferment should i scrap it and start again?

any help and advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Richy

Hi Richy your alcometer only reads spirit strength. what you need to do is take a hydromiter reading(SG) at the start and finish of fermentation if you didn't take one at the start of your ferment never mind. at the end of your ferment the Sg should be less than SG 0.990.If you followed the yeast instructions with 6kg of sugar your start SG should have been about 1.090 and final Sg of about 0.986 yours is at 1.000 so a few more days should do it

IE 1090-986 = 104 /7.36 =14.1 abv
cheers
