I replaced mine with 1p's - never looked back.
About 50p worth... or about 1/2 tumbler depending on how you measure 'em ?

Re: Ceramic Boil Enhancers
The straight answer is when they fall apart, which they eventually do.
By the time my first half packet had started to disintegrate, maybe after 30 uses,I moved on to copper pipe offcuts instead of ceramic and never used them again.

Re: Ceramic Boil Enhancers
Copper is said to purify the spirit. I think it might be tried into neutralizing sulphites.
Even is SS columns you find many folks add a few bits of copper.
So copper is a good thing.
With an Airstill you are trying to stop puking. Which is caused the water super heating. Movement, even the smallest vibration will stop superheating and promote a gentle simmer thus mitigating the risk of a puke (or surge)
So IMO you need to cover the bottom of the still. As the bubbles generated by boiling move the rings and create ripples.
Very similar to the big glass lump you can buy to stop milk pans boiling over .. think they were called milk savers !

It removes sulfur-based compounds...
just cut up a piece of copper into small bits, it's all down to surface area..

Re: Ceramic Boil Enhancers
well, at distilling class they said, that certain washes don't need copper at all.
Also as I am from the business, I had a talk with the main sales person from Carl, he said that the real reason, they want to sell more copper than SS is, it is cheaper for them to produce.
It is a question, that will stay for much longer, I guess.

Re: Ceramic Boil Enhancers
While I remain convinced that the use of a lot of copper in a still or condenser is good,I will leave others to form their own opinion.
If anyone here, that strives for a malt whisky has not read "Peat Smoke and Spirit" can I suggest that they do?
It does suggest that the choice or style of condenser is not left to an individual distillery manager, but is now corporately dedided.
Robert.

Re: Ceramic Boil Enhancers
I don't suggest anything, I use copper in my still myself.
I just say: the copper discussion is a never ending one. And it is well worth reading
Things will always change: the more distillers there are, the more experience is made and the more different approaches will be. It is an exiting hobby and a very interesting profession.
