Treacle / Syrup Questions
Morning all,
I've been reading around & seen bits about washes being made from black treacle and/or golden syrup, then I found these guys ( http://www.cateringsupplier.co.uk/shop/ ... U02105.htm ) & thought it was a pretty reasonable price which lead me to trying to put a rum recipe together. I know a lot of you here make rum so I wondered if you had used these as your primary ingredients & what kind of proportions you used them in? I'm not after a really heavy flavour, SWMBO enjoys Bacardi & I would like to make something that makes her think twice about complaining about the smell in the airing cupboard!
I wondered what your opinions were on treacle vs feed molasses & what kinda split would make a light to medium rum? My current thoughts lean towards a 2/3rds treacle to 1/3rd syrup, then the bakers yeast & raisins that have worked so well for me before.
All advice great fully received

Re: Treacle / Syrup Questions
That would certainly negate the issue of how much treacle to syrup Mashy! I'm sure by the time she's put Coke in it anything close to rum would pass & everyone in RumJohns thread seem to be very happy with the final product...I think you may have talked me into it!
Would still love to hear any thoughts on black treacle, I'm just out to get some golden syrup for erm...research purposes!

Just my twopence worth Benoit.
For a light and flavoursome Rum, RJ's Cachaca recipe will take some beating.
Should you ever try a Treacle (not GS) type wash, let us know how it goes, my suspicion is more like a "Navy" taste.
Robert.
BTW,each time I see a post by yourself,I am reminded of sailing into L'Arber Benoit, many moons ago.

Re: Treacle / Syrup Questions
Thanks Robert, I set a cacacha wash going last nite so we'll see how that turns out then I'll start experimenting with the black treacle. I'm guessing it should be quite similar to a fancy molasses wash, I'll have another read through Anavarin's thread for some tips.
I hope the memory is a pleasant one, otherwise I might have to limit my posting!

I fermented some molasses through, a few years ago - OMG that was rough. Althought a mate of mine loved it in coke ?!?!
