Re: Soldering.
yes thats correct,
On a 42-22mm fitting reducer.....
the larger end has a 42mm OD that will fit inside a 42mm coupler
the smaller end is the same as a 22mm coupler and has a 22mm ID, and will take either a 22mm tube or a fitting reducer where the larger end is 22mm
Does that make sense?

I knew that I knew that, until so many questions.
Freaky that it made me question myself.

Re: Soldering.
I did make a mistake in the end. Amongst other things, I ordered a 35mm x 15mm coupler and a 15mm x 8mm coupler, thinking they would fit together at the 15mm end. Unfortunately I should have ordered15x8mm reducer. I have now obtained the 15x8mm reducer locally and it fits well.
Two more questions.
1. When fitting a 6 or 8mm pipe should I drill the exact size of the pipe and rub the pipe down a bit or, drill half a mm larger, filling any gap with solder?
2. I note some parrots have the alcometer holder sitting slightly higher than the outlet bowl. I had assumed that this would simply be matter of pushing the body of the parrot up through the receiving bowl before soldering in place.. However, the lip in the coupler reducer prevents this. Am I overlooking a simple solution?

Re: Soldering.
Not overlooking exactly, but you need to remove that lip to allow the other piece to travel through the fitting. Either file it away, or use a rotary dremel-like tool if you have one. I bought a Black & Decker version, they're sooo useful!

Re: Soldering.
Thanks for that Dave. More labour intensive than I had hoped, but definitely doable.
Any thoughts on the matter of the drilling for the 6/8mm pipes?

In practice, especially when using a hand drill, the hole tends to end up larger than the drill size, so, I'd use a size for size drill, and go from there. It's always better to take metal off than put it on! A nice tight fit is what you should be aiming for. Half a mm bigger is huge in relative terms,it's more than 10% of a 6mm pipe, and will result in what's known as a "piss fit"...

Re: Soldering.
Just finished my first venture into soldering. Suffering from two left hands when it comes to practical tasks like this, I am modestly pleased to have actually finished the task.
Thanks again to all who offered advice.
As mentioned previously I still did get confused when ordering my reducers and had to purchase a couple locally.
When starting to assemble, for soldering, I very carefully rubbed down the parts to be soldered and then forgot to put any flux on them before soldering.
Although I already had torch which look very similar to one of those suggested, I soon found that it appeared not to burn hot enough. I bought a better one from Screwfix.
Behold!

My apologies to all those artistic craftsmen who regularly show us their skills, but I have thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Not sure of the correct point scoring language for that one, but I'll give it Neuf points.
