Looking to start a wash today but only have 4kg of sugar in the house. Will it be OK to start the wash as normal and then just add the extra 2kg of sugar tomorrow? I can't think of any reason why not but older, wiser heads may know better!

Look at the staggered sugar wash. If your recipe is similar, it should be know problem.

Why not wait until you have all the sugar at hand? Consistency that way.

It was just a timing issue, mate. I was racking off some cider and was going to clean the FV and start the wash straight away.

I always do a staggered sugar addition ... last one was 20kg sugar then 3 days later another 10kg of sugar plus some additional nutrients.

I have much better results in my experience doing it that way

Wow! that's a lot of sugar. What volume fermentation are you running Iain?

I ferment 100 litres at a time. Tend to use 3 packets of vodkastar in 100 litres ... seems to work fine. Finishes at .990 at around 16% or so.

Where I live I have trouble keeping a constant temp even with an aquarium heater in the winter so I brew a lot of wash during spring / summer / into autumn then I get to play ...

It's quite time consuming as I use an air still too lol ... should be building something a little better during the summer though

I want to start aging using oak chips so would like a nice supply I can tuck away and forget about
