Hi Jaggie

You know you could probably make a pot still out of copper to fit the T500 for about £30 maybe less, if you can solder copper that is, maybe this could be a little side line for me!!!'

Been reading this and the other rum threads with interest, finally decided to hop on board as I've an end game in sight. 35 litres over 2 buckets, 5kg blackstrap, 4 kg raw sugar, pinch of epsom and a healthy dose of bakers. Split as best I could but didn't make it as 4 points difference in OSG. Both up and running hard immediately. Nice to have an end game as most of my washes sit in cleared for up to a year before I motivate :)

I am interested to hear how this comes out of the PDA-1. I really disliked blackstrap rum out of the AirStill, but then I hate the blackstrap molasses. A reflux still might be able to tone this down to a drinkable rum.

Ahhh chill....I'll be doing it pot mode, which the PDA seems to handle okay. Have run smoked cornflake whisky washes which translated well so hoping same applies here. The blackstrap was stockfeed grade. I asked of the manufacturers as to suitability and was assured okay (not that they wanted to encourage alcohol consumption) but informed me product is used in the fermentation industry in country. Sucking on a spoonful I found it surprisingly palatable. If the pot don't work, reflux will be fall back but I have a spiced option in sight. Keep you posted and fingers crossed.

Are blackstrap and molasses the same thing?

When I started with this hobby if I read anything that I thought would help later I bookmarked the site...as I love Rum this was one site I found...http://www.rumshop.net/classifications.html.

Just scroll down an inch or two and you'll see that it's all down to the sugar level mate.... ;)

I put a smidge too much glycerin in my last lot - very fine line and I overstepped it.

I've got the Rum bug now, theres only so much neutral spirit/Vodka you can drink before you get bored with it, but I've got my 50lt of Cachaca Rum to strip, Im just waiting for my parrot kit from StillDragon, just cant work out how best to run it, either straight with 4 plates and no stripping run, or strip then 4 plates for the spirit run, another idea I got off Punkin on the SD forum is to strip one batch, then add it to the next wash and then run it through 4 plates.

Equipment wise Im going to have to chop up my 2" column to make a bend with a tri-clamp fitting on each end and use my dephlagmator as a product condenser, will be an interesting project to see if the StillDragon 2" Big Baby Dephlagmator will work as a product condenser but my new parrot will only attach to a 2" tri-clamp fitting so I've got no choice.

If I wasn't getting married in two weeks, the money I've spent could have bought a really nice bit of kit!!!!
