Re: Moonshiners TV show - Love it or hate it?
Despite its many technical flaws and despite my hatred of Discovery portaying fiction as reality, I have to admit it is a little guilty pleasure & i do find it entertaining
I think really I'm more in love with the idea of what they're doing, I enjoy getting out into the woods going for walks etc. Being out surrounded by all that beautiful nature with a couple of close friends AND making whiskey...what's not to love about that situation?!

I have watched a few , well more than a few just to see the entertainment of it. I have never learned anything from it, cept perhaps that CutiePie is a pretty sorry looking dog, Oh and they did a show about Cape Breton Moonshiners. it was not at all accurate and more of a farce,,
The show is just that entertainment!!

I watched the first series and actually believed it, thought it was quite audacious but wondered how that sort of activity was possible in this day and age of aerial surveillance and thermal imaging.
Then it came back for a second series and the penny dropped.
Other than portraying fiction as reality, without mentioning that this is just a dramatization (sic), what really bugs me about the Discovery channel is how little new programme content they can manage to fit into a one hour slot.
What with a 5 minute reminder of what happened last week, a 2 minute teaser of what's happening this week, 5 minutes of fresh content with numerous replays of any incidents or accidents, a 5 minute advert and trailer break and then a reminder of what happened before the break for those with the memory of a goldfish - very little actually happens at all.

I've caught a couple of episodes of the first series....the biggest thing I found was how stupid are the FED's. You show your face, you then show how to make a still, all shown on tv....and the fuzz still can't feel their collars..

I tried to be normal once, worst two minutes of my life.

Thanks GTF.
You have made me feel so much more content that I cannot actually watch this.

I love this show and although some of the scenes are clearly staged (and some not like tickle breaking his ribs and Jesse breaking his fingers!) when you hear some of the guys talk about moonshining it's obvious they know what they're doing, Tim's story of going legal is great and his climax' moonshine is now available for £80.00 a bottle in the UK!!

Re: Moonshiners TV show - Love it or hate it?
Really £80 a bottle??! Unless he's changed his back woods methods I'm right in thinking he's selling an unaged corn / rye flavoured sugarhead?! Or do you think going legal has forced him into a more traditional mashing routine? Either way that's steep!
The only thing that's caught my eye so far this series is why the hell would anyone chop jalapeños into their fermenting bucket & I want to try Apple rye brandy!
They've shown a lot more of people throwing fores/heads away this season, maybe a guilty conscience on behalf of the discovery channel there? My concern has always been when they store finished alcohol in plastic bottles, or worse "aging" it in buckets by a fire?! Bit risky!

It makes me smile that people that live on this forum, usually for brief periods, where sound instruction and advice is doled out freely, watch this, if they have the option to do so.
I waste my "silly" time in other ways, and I won't say that such people are any less than myself, how we amuse ourselves is part of what makes us all get along.
This world would be awful if everyone was perfect like me
Robert.

When it's late,I'm stood ironing & the little one is asleep, it certainly beats what ever the Mrs would choose to have on! I don't think I've learned anything from it, although I do admit it's what got me reading forums & started my journey distilling. Luckily I'm the kind of person who reads as much as is available before doing anything, I can think of more than a few people who wouldn't be so careful though
