Brain storming.....Ideas on this please......

Happened on this site for clay ovens it's just what we want for up at the allotment....we have the odd get together over the summer, and it would be great to wheel a clay oven out of the shed, fire it up...and hey presto.

You can see it's based on a wheelbarrow, but you wouldn't want a barrow full of concrete for the base..... :D

What about a frame fixed into the barrow??? then a layer of fire bricks....followed by the dome???

Ideas please.. ;)

I couldn't get the image but will try again.
I would consider a wheelbarrow style frame. Better still a sack truck - this method allows to people to pull it. And it's not incredibly wobbly because it's on two wheels. :D

They are very very good, but it will be heavy for quite a small oven.

How far away is the allotment - what sort of terrain does it need to go over? and how many prop forward mates have you got?

As for the build consider putting chickenwire in it. They get fragile once they have been fired for the first time, so some reinforcing wouldn't go amiss.

There are also some cracking opens that have been made out of oil drums and straw bales. Not a BBQ but a tunnel oven. I very nearly made one in a water pipe!

Looking at the pic in the link you posted Ice,may I suggest that the oven,and its base bricks sits upon cinder and not concrete.Lightweight and fairly insulating from the metal of the barrow.
I could be completely wrong,and what I see as cinder may be charcoal.
I am not understanding the heat source here.
It may indeed be concrete in there.
I would imagine this would be a top heavy bugger to move.

It shouldn't be too difficult to improve upon the concept.

Here's my DIY version, get yourself a cadac pizza stone

Ideally also get a Cadac portable Gas BBQ, I have the carry chef 2, an amazing peice of kit, packs away in a carry pack

I don't have the pizza stone with mine but I would start with this and some kind of gas burner underneath, then build the oven around it, wheelbarrow optional :)

Good idea 2 wheels....less wobble

It would stay in the shed up on the plot, just wheel it out about 10 yds on flat hard ground.

100% with that...got chicken wire spare.

Found this here..I have a new 50 gall (used once for tractor oil) barrel up the shed....food for thought...no fear of cracks there.

That means spending money mate... :D nearly £200....think of the stilling porn I could buy. 8)

We have a gas BBQ....hardly ever use it..just don't taste the same somehow..cheers for your thoughts and ideas guys

The whole basis of these ovens is you have a wood fire in them. The heat is absorbed by the masonry. You then cook with the fire in OR the fire out, depending on what you are cooking.

They do not need a chimney. and definitely not just there !!

68% is the magic figure, though (from memory) That is the ratio of the door height given the height of the dome.

Air rushes in the bottom, fuels the fire, which swirls round in the dome and then the smoke comes out the top of the door. The chimney in the original picture is just making it inefficient. When they get enormous a chimney is added but it is in front of the door, not in the dome.

Have you considered making one that looks like a bookend! This way could store it in the shed - resting on 2 bits of 2x2 and then just pick it up with the sack truck when you wanted it?

Just looking at the picture, and I suspect that filling a barrow with concrete would make it prohibitively heavy.

Whereas, a layer of MOT/type 1 sub-base, then a layer of ballast or sharp sand, and a decent layer of earth/soil to settle the brick onto before making the domed part would work. Once the water has been dried out it shouldn't be too heavy.........

Or you could just look up info on "rocket stove" and make one, but in a barrow........
