I've added a drop of oil and not noticed a difference.

Want is it supposed to do?

Olive oil is used by winemakers but I can't see the reason in a lentil wash.

well, that was my first thought. But I read the post as adding it as part of the ferment. ???

Yeah, as part of the ferment, apparently for help with giving yeast access to oxygen to reproduce. The supposed gain is faster to start, faster to finish. I'm sceptical but was thinking of trying it. As mashy already tried it I doubt I will. Blog post someone did and discussion here in the comments: http://www.winning-homebrew.com/olive-oil.html

When I read that article. There is a big dollop of good old-fashioned tripe in it when he starts talking about staling(oxidisation) during fermentation. This is impossible unless you set out to do it in a big big way.

I don't think the addition can harm in any way the BIG question is will you WHISK/AERATE after the boil. To prove this, you ought to rack in out of the boiler !!

for what it is worth, my money is on ... it won't start as well.

This is almost another thread? are we in danger of going off topic here?

When I came upon this recipe, with the help of Scarecrow, I was in search of simplicity having been down the ever complicated recipe route.

Abiding by the KISSprinciple I was looking to come up with a recipe that required little but produced a consistent, clean wash for making neutral spirit.

Anything that further simplifies the recipe while improving the outcome or at least maintaining the same outcome is very much part of the exercise of recipe development.

Can't wait to read what effect using the oil has.

I don't agree that the thread is going Image

I do agree with Snoopy...

If we don't experiment with a recipe....we'll never know. Image

I do believe this sounds daft, having read the link.
My reason being that 300ml of oil on top of I believe 168,000 litres in a large tun is a veritable oil slick,a toothpick dipping in 5 litres isn't.
I accept that I maybe completely wrong here, and I am one of the voices here that promote radical ideas, and so I look forward to someone proving me wrong.
I also believe recipes are to be mucked around with, and possibly improved,I am always doing so,sometimes with good effect, sometimes not.
I'm human,it's what I do..

The big test is will it start a mash with no aeration? The ideal test would be a beer, after a boil and then racked in out of the boiler too.

I need some more IPA soon so .....
"Cortana" "remind me to add olive oil next time a make IPA"

Liking the humour, but don't come to me with your "Cortana" posts,.
I'm dreading the next version of windows, which apparently will include it.
It would be nice to think that there will be a simple enable//diss-enable button.
Hopefully easier to find than some of the control parameters for windows 8 or 8.1.
I feel an audition to "Grumpy Old Men" coming on..

I indulge in that particular sin once or twice a year, with regular fries,a hot apple pie and a chocolate shake.
Am coming to the end of a strip run, feeling hungry, but the nearest drive through is over 20 miles away, and I have had a drink or three.
It'll be a cheese sandwich then....
