Well spotted - missed that one.

Just dropped my keg off at a place to get some ferrules welded onto it, 4" ferrule for the opening and a 2" one on the side at the bottom for the element, I will fit a skin fitting for a bottom drain once I get it back, I'll post a few pics too, along with the costings, I'm guessing it'll come in under £150, which is pretty good for a new 50lt boiler with a 3 kW element and tri-clamp fittings.

Just had a message from the welding place, be about £30 to fit the 2" ferrule in the side for the element and the 4" ferrule on the top, replacing the keg connector, doesn't seem so bad, so far I've got £105 invested in the keg, £75 for the keg, plus £30 for the mods.

Almost forgot to add the cost of the weld on ferrules from StillDragon, they work out at £14 for both, bringing the boiler build cost to £119 so far, hopefully I'll get it back by the weekend

In the general scheme of things,those costs sound very reasonable to me,for what you end up with.

Just got the Keg back from the welder, took longer than I thought but they were busy and so have I over the last couple of weeks, I've had a 4" tri-clamp ferrule on the top for the column connection and a 2" tri-clamp ferrule at the bottom for the heating element, just need to fit a bottom drain and give it all a good clean.

Ooooh aaaha. Very nice.

Out of interest. Why do we all seem to settle on the small dia element heads instead of the larger british standard?

It just make it easier to fit the element, StillDragon make an element housing that takes a 1"BSP thread and connects to a 2" tri-clamp, I thought about just cutting a hole for a UK size immersion element but in order to use a Q-Max cutter you need to get the inner part of the cutter inside the keg which won't fit through the standard leg connector, you also need a Essex flange, the cutter and flange will cost you about £60.

My two ferrules cost me about £14 and to get the holes cut and the ferrules welded on it was £25, so I guess it's just econimical, it's also easy to swap out elements of they connect with a tri-clamp ferrule.

The only hard part is sourcing an element with a 1"BSP Thread, which isn't too difficult if you search around a little, I bought mine off Amazon.

Finally got around to cleaning it inside and fitting a bottom drain, I'm working away for a few days, so I've filled it with water to test for leaks, then I'll be boiling some vinegar, followed by a boil with some saved heads before pressing it into action proper :-)

Looks great Anavrin, would you mind sharing a bit more around the element & what ferrules you've used? I'm off work next week & going to start the welding on my fusti, what you have there is exactly what I want mine to look like
