Where can I get cheap sugar?

We popped into Aldi yesterday their sugar was 89p kg....so for me it's still Tesco's..at 80p kg.

I have seen the local Asian shops selling sugar as low as 73p/kg.

I offered to buy 50kg if they reduced the price, and the answer was no!

The guy did say he thought CostCo was the cheapest place to get sugar, which is where he got his three (yes, 3) pallets of sugar from!

e2a: I just looked at the CostCo website and there is no white sugar in bulk - maybe this guy has bought the lot, eh?

See this topic pops up every now and again.

People seem to forget, just how much of a "commodity" sugar is, inasfaras the price does vary considerably.

I can get 25 kg bags of T&L (I don't buy beet sugar, only cane) for about £20 a bag from the local ingredients supplier, or 25 kg bags of dextrose for about £23 a bag (and no, I can't determine any benefit in using dextrose over cane table sugar).

Generally, it does seem easiest to make use of the big boys bulk buy facility and either 1 or 5 kg bags. Just have to waste a bit of time to check the prices........

If I assume sugar at the local shop is 90p/kg and the offer is 50kg for £35 (70p/kg) - a saving of 20p / kg

I reckon to buy 4 x 25kg (100kg) to save £20 is prob worth the time and £5 in petrol to get it. Plus there's free coffee, so I'll be petty and get a fiver's worth of free coffee while I'm at it.

So I'll be off later to get sugar-loaded!

Just looked in the Abu Dhabi Co-op.

A 10kg bag of sugar = 4.50 UK Pounds (0.45 per Kilo).

10 kg Excess baggage to bring it home is 175.00 UK Pounds.

Back to Sainsbury's.

Sugar prices are obviously a regional thing.
The Stirling Lidl is now price matching the Aldi and farmfoods at 75p/Kg
Tesco is 89p.
Go figure,as our American friends say.
I'm still looking for inexpensive Golden syrup.......but stocking up the white stuff.

Somewhere here, someone said about using brown sugar but that it is twice the price...


Wouldn't white sugar and a few teaspoons of molasses work at a pinch and be massively cheaper?

Unless you can get real raw sugar (like Panela or Demerara) white and molasses will be the same thing as brown. Rum is the only reason to use anything other than white sugar.

I use a poor quality brown sugar for everything I make - except cachaca. Mostly I make rum so the high molasses content of this brown sugar serves me well, For gin and vodka I distill to a higher ABV and remove the rum characteristics.

I dont use a yeast nutrition unless I am making cachaca. What works very well is the juice from a fresh coconut. The yeast thrives on it.
