Try a few coins you will see a difference. Its also a good indicator for whats happening inside.

Does it matter with an exposed element Mash? I never thought about it before but what if one flips up & gets caught in the element? Won't short out of over heat will it?

No. The outer skin of the element is hot but not live. The live bit is inside the tubular element and surrounded by powder.

No not an airstill, the element in my water urn is concealed so I just threw the bits in but I was playing with the element in my fusti this morning when the thought crossed my mind that I don't know how high the coins flip up as the boil progresses & whether they could cause issues

Myles's points are of course spot on.

The coins will only move in an airstill because the heat is directly under them. If is a secondary effect caused by a film of liquid under the coin boiling.

Great idea. Bargain price too! Just bought 20 for £2.84 including P&P!!

How many do you use and is that all you out in the bottom of the boiler?

Every now & then I ask something so glaringly stupid I have to curse myself out loud in front of people who then think I've lost the plot, this was one of those moments!

Don't fret, the quote from Mash makes little sense :)
