making it go clear\'er? hmmm will have to check in the morning.

just out of interest i live in a hard water area (lots of limescale/limestone in the water etc) could this be killing it?

Hi Rum-warrior. The lime in hard water won\'t upset the yeast at all. If you brew bitter beers and have soft water, it\'s good to chuck in some extra calcium and magnesium salts.

My brown sugar version has been finished from thursday down to 992. I hasnt cleared at all or still looks like brown water. So I will add the clear after racking it off tonight and see how it goes.

well checked the wash, its deffinatly clearing, thats at day 5

(note i have not had the lid off so far, and have not disturbed the wash at all).
gunna give it till tuesday till i check the SG, i hope its below 990 (would like to see 980 though).

very very gray/mily wash ..... looks very odd
well the sg looked to be 988 - 990 to me today, if it aint changed tomorrow well its gunna get cleared

Have you not added the clearing agent yet?im a bit confused and thought you had,If you decant into another container and add it then,it will turn out chrystal clear!!

Well I'm also in a "calcium rich" area, with lots of chalk/limescale and when I've got a batch going, it's often left for 2 weeks (don't bother checking the gravity myself though.....) and it always seems to drop the carbon toward the end i.e. sometimes goes the milky grey sort of colour, othertimes, it will stay quite dark with more carbon suspended - either way, I goes back to black once it's been stirred to de-gas and after clearing, it tends to be from a slightly translucent clear, to gin clear!
I've found that on occasion when I experienced a few over boils, it would always be when the wash wasn't quite as clear as it might be......... though I don't get those now by using boiling stones/saddles/rashig rings and a capful of distillers conditioner....
As for undistilled wash and/or distillate smelling of vinegar ? well I don\'t know what analogy to use, but certainly not vinegar.... It seems that it does have it\'s own distinct, yet hard to describe smell....

My brown sugar mix didn\'t clear very well even with turbo clear. Put the clear in on Friday. Will still it tonight and see how it goes. I brought the Nano filter as well.

brown sugar with the triple distill yeast isnt going to achieve much, it will ferement differently with much higher impurities as the sugars are more complex, the yeast wasnt designed to feed on brown sugar, but origanlly dextrose and still spirits turbo sugars.

To memory brown sugar is white sugar sprayed with molasses

I only used it because I was too lazy to go shopping and it was in the pantry. All worked fine. I got my usual 3.6L @ 94% and smelt fine.
