Is everything ok
Hi guys
Started my first wash a week last Friday so eleven days later its still fermenting, the bottom half of the wash is a dull grey with the top half a light grey.
The only reason I'm asking is the shop where I purchased the stuff from and looking on the internet they say it should take around seven days to ferment.
Just asking from some of you guys who have been doing it for a while does everything look ok.
Cheers

Mate, what wash are you doing (ie what recipe) and what is the temp of the wash?
I ask as these questions will go some way re help answering your post IMHO.

Hi fatlad from what you have said it sounds like its done but the best way to test this is to take an SG reading with a hydrometer if the reading is less than 0.990 its done, but to be sure take another reading the day after until you get two readings the same, because of the gas within your wash this can keep your air lock bubbling slowly even though its finihed hence the need for degassing before fining.

Thanks billmac
I didn't whether I could remove the lid whilst there bubbles still coming out of the airlock.
This is my first attempt and want to do everything right and not cut corners.

If you only have the one fermenter, just leave the hydrometer in the wash. You can check the reading without needing to dip out a sample.

Re: Is everything ok
Your wash is settling as wash has stopped fermenting and the layering you are looking at is the solids heading for the bottom. The wash is finished and not likely to be stuck.Your ready for a stripping run.

I leave my turbos 2 weeks, then rack off and add Turboklar finings, leave 1 week and rack off clear wash for distilling. I use 7kg sugar in 30 litres, get about 13.5%
