Your cork will be good,and is perfectly safe.
The only problem that you might have is that after a "wet" use,you allow it to dry, and the seal is lost,it may then require re-tightening.

Try a hair dryer on it! While peeling gently - will reach the right temp and suddenly peel easy and cleanly off

That looks just like what I am after , I normaly use demijohns for my gin infusing but I wanted to do bay leaf gin and the leafs would not come out of a demijohn very well , as for the tap I would not need it so could I just put a cork in the hole ?

all this talk of gin I just had to make myself a monkey 47 G&T .....of course mashy 70cl bottle of gin with 15 bay leafs and leave to infuse for up to 3 mouths

I 8l seems to have a taller neck and the jar is wider. Off to The range to find out.
