Hi just wondering how long people leave their neutral on the jd chips.
I have just put 100grm in 3ltr
I've only been brave enough to leave it for 7 days as I'm scared of over oaking.

You can forget about over oaking if you're using JD chips but from my experience you'll need more than 100g in 3lt. There's a whole thread around here about using JD chips of different kinds with a lotof pictures and progress reports, you should have a look, I think you'll find it useful.

I currently have a 20lt batch on JD chips since 03 Nov and not planning to bottle that sucker until Christmas week and it'll have been there over 50 days at that stage - no a problem.

It's starting to get a nice colour and I shake it every time in pass it.
I could only get 100g in the jar. It's a 3ltr pickling jar I'm using, it's the largest wide mout container I have at present.
Out of curiosity how many(weight) chips are in your large batch?
I'm just going to stick to sugar washes and jd chips for now to try and build up a backlog.

Just for clarity, I use JD BBQ Chips and not the JD chips sold by HBS which I found were a complete ripoff. I had stopped using them for a while but got an opportunity to buy a bulk amount and took it. I got them for one Euro a bag that's about 82p to you in real money



The bags weigh around 800g I use two bags of these, after rinsing and steaming, in 20lt of neutral spirit. This makes a very passable anyday Whisky good for sipping or mixing.

You said you could only get 100g of chips in the jar but you could remove some spirit from the jar to make room for more chips. If you do, then keep the removed spirit in a jar and, when you filter the spirit off the chips for bottling, you can add the removed portion back in.

If you're going to use JD BBQ Chips I recommend 2.125lt on 200g for 10 days and give your jar a good shake every day and it will look like this...


...and taste like mmmmmmmmmm!

Filter through cotton wool in a funnel to remove any wood particles or dust that may be in the spirit then enjoy.

They are the same chips I'm using but mine weren't anywhere near as cheap as yours
£6 a bag at B&Q I think it was.
Think I'm going to remove a little spirit as you recommended.

Hi all, for me 2 gallon of neutral, 1 bag JD BBQ chips and 2 months later. Well happy with the taste

Well using AM's advice (again) I have the most fantastic spirit I've made to date!
It was unfiltered neutral on the chips for 10 days and all I can say is wow!
Filter should arrive today or tomorrow but probably won't have another wash on till new year
But AM, your a star and thank you for your continued guidance through my journey of home distillation.

Once mine has developed in, colour and taste, to where I want it I simply filter through cotton wool in a funnel to remove any dust and wood particles.

To filter my Whisky I get flat BP quality cotton wool from the pharmacy and cut a piece to fit in my SS funnel. I put part of a SS scrubber in the funnel and place a square of flat cotton wool on top of the scrubber and pour the Whisky through the cotton wool into individual bottles or a DJ. Result, crystal clear Whisky Enjoy

Oh I do that kind of filtering. Just haven't had a carbon filter till now so everything I've got is
Just raw diluted spirit then Oaked and filtered through a coffee filter in a stainless funnel plugged with cotton wool.
Shame ya can't carbon filter Oaked spirit really but hey.
I also have 1 x 1ltr jar that's still on the chips that I'll leave till the 23rd and see how that tastes.
What's the longest you've ever left it AM?

I have a batch of real Bourbon on the virgin, toasted, American White Oak since Sept 2012 which is going to be bottled next week It tastes of magic and wonder and it's far too good to be consumed with anything added. A real sipping Whisky

I sometimes forget that with the Airstill you need to filter everything because with my Pot Still and Thumper I only ever have to filter Vodka.
